Growing up in the 80s, I should have been well-versed in quotes from The Princess Bride, had a solid grasp of the Brat Pack, and recognized the fierce talent of Carrie Fisher. Unfortunately, my family didn’t have cable, and trips to the cinema were rare. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered Carrie Fisher played Princess Leia—I only watched Star Wars for the first time about six years ago! My knowledge of the Brat Pack remains nonexistent, and I just caught up with The Princess Bride.
Look, I admit it: I’m probably letting my generation down. But the truth is, many beloved films from that era are, if we’re honest, not that great. While Carrie Fisher is undeniably iconic and Star Wars deserves its accolades, some other films? Not so much. Here’s a take on a few cult classics that might actually be more cringe than classic.
Jaws
I recently watched this film with my children, and I was surprised at how laughable the special effects are. Is it supposed to be a horror movie or a comedy? The line between the two is quite blurred.
Rocky
As someone who isn’t into boxing, I found it hard to grasp the film’s appeal. Even if you appreciate the underdog story, there are glaring issues, such as Rocky’s treatment of Adrian. Within the first few scenes, I had to have conversations with my kids about consent and respect. When Adrian expressed discomfort, Rocky should have respected her feelings and walked her home instead!
E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial
Before you come for me, I don’t think E.T. is terrible; I just don’t think it’s all that remarkable. I didn’t feel any emotional connection, despite being a crier. Plus, I couldn’t help but wonder: how did their mother not notice an alien was living in their home?!
The Princess Bride
Yes, there are some funny moments, but can we talk about Princess Buttercup? She’s one of the most disappointing characters in film history. While Inigo is undeniably amusing, the lack of strong female characters makes it tough to watch, especially with my kids.
A Christmas Story
This film drags with a boring plot and lacks genuine humor. It also perpetuates stereotypes from the 40s and features some questionable parenting tactics. My kids were shocked by the scene where soap is put in a child’s mouth—it’s just mean!
Gremlins
This film is a nightmare that lingers in your mind long after viewing.
Grease
The film opens with a line that seems to endorse date rape, which is incredibly concerning. Overall, it’s filled with outdated stereotypes and problematic messages regarding consent.
Now, before you label me as someone who can’t appreciate 80s pop culture, I do enjoy several classics from that era, including Star Wars (with Carrie Fisher at her best), Stand By Me, and Dirty Dancing—which I believe is the best movie ever. I still need to catch up on Indiana Jones, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Heathers. I guess my childhood was a bit sheltered!

Summary
While 80s cult classics hold a nostalgic charm, many do not stand the test of time. From Jaws to Grease, some films are surprisingly dated or problematic, making them less enjoyable for a modern audience.
