A Message to My Students About School Safety

Dear Students,

Recently, you witnessed a terrifying event as children your age fled their school, hands on their heads, while some managed to capture the chaos unfolding in a classroom similar to yours. That day, 17 lives were lost in a place where you should feel secure—your school. Tragically, this isn’t the first time you’ve encountered such violence.

When you came into my classroom that day, fear evident in your eyes, you asked me what I would do if a shooter entered the building. You sought comfort in knowing I had a plan to protect you, to ensure your safety. I assured you I did, having carefully mapped out how to evacuate you to safety, fully aware that I might have to shield you with my own body. Like many other educators, I would stand between you and danger.

In the months to come, I understand that every fire alarm may trigger anxiety, that loud noises will make you jump, and that lockdown drills may fill you with dread. I want to emphasize: this is not how it should be. You shouldn’t feel fear in my classroom or worry about returning home to your families. This reality is unacceptable, and we—the adults—have failed you. We haven’t provided you with a safe learning environment, nor have we taken action to stop the violence that continues to plague our schools.

Every day that we do nothing to limit access to firearms for those who shouldn’t possess them, we fail you. Those in power often say, “now is not the time” to discuss gun control. But you know that school shootings happen more than once a week in this country. If not now, when? You ask why no one seems to take action, and I struggle to explain; the truth is, there’s no reasonable justification for prioritizing gun rights over your safety.

Today, you openly questioned how many more lives must be lost before we collectively wake up and take action. I had no answer.

So let me say this: I will do everything in my power to safeguard you. I will address bullying to prevent future harm, listen when you express concerns about someone’s safety, and take appropriate action. I will reassure you repeatedly that I am committed to your protection, no matter what it takes.

I care deeply for each one of you. I wish I could assure you that the latest tragedy would prompt those in power to prioritize your lives over profits, but I can’t make that promise. What I can guarantee is that I love you, and you deserve so much more than what this world currently offers.

We all deserve better.

– Ms. Taylor
