My Child’s YouTube Journey: A Proud Parent’s Perspective

Recently, my son received an uplifting letter from one of his teachers, and it couldn’t have come at a more crucial moment. This caring educator took the time to express gratitude for my son’s YouTube videos focused on raising awareness about ADHD.

In his note, the teacher shared:

“I came across your videos while searching for ways to better connect with my students. It’s true—educators need to learn just as much as students do! Your insights on feelings like loneliness and frustration were incredibly helpful. I loved how you emphasized the importance of positive reinforcement from teachers when kids give their best. Hearing you say, ‘I feel with my heart and think with my feelings,’ was truly inspiring.” — Mr. H

He concluded his heartfelt message with a special note:

“I’m thrilled to have discovered your videos and to have learned about your experience with ADHD. You’ve taught me something invaluable! Thank you!” — Mr. H

This letter arrived just when I needed it, as some parents at my son’s school have been gossiping about his ADHD awareness videos. They claim that I’m pushing him to create these videos and that he will regret it later.

Regret what, exactly?
Regret helping over 7 million people understand ADHD better?
Regret educating others, including teachers like Mr. H, on how to support children with ADHD?
Regret starting a pen pal program that connects children with ADHD to foster friendships?
Regret being himself?

These parents don’t know me or my son. Their children aren’t even friends with him. It’s astonishing that they feel entitled to judge us like a group of immature teenagers. It’s time to grow up, ladies!

My son understands the significant impact he’s having through his ADHD videos. He knows he’s making a difference and is justifiably proud of his efforts. It requires immense courage to openly share the realities of living with ADHD, and I commend him for his bravery.

For the record, I have never once pressured him to make any videos. I’ve always assured him that if he ever wants to stop or remove them, I will fully support his decision. His feelings always come first.

To the parents who think my son will regret his ADHD awareness work in the future, I ask: Why? Should he be ashamed of his ADHD? Should he refrain from educating others? Instead of uplifting my son for his honesty and courage, you choose to tear us down? That won’t fly.

Families living with ADHD are often filled with helpers, and when faced with negativity, they become fighters. When someone tries to diminish their light, they shine even brighter, often with a supportive community of fellow ADHDers rallying behind them. (My blog isn’t called My Little Helpers for no reason!)

A significant part of the issue is that these parents likely have no experience with ADHD or a loved one who has it. Their judgmental behavior after watching the awareness videos only highlights their lack of empathy. I feel for them and their children, who may grow up to mirror such narrow-mindedness—becoming gossipers who ignore those who are different. In contrast, children who learn to appreciate diversity will thrive.

There are incredible adult YouTubers like Sarah Johnson, who is effectively educating families about ADHD. One of her channels has a large following, and she’s celebrated for her transparency. I can only wonder what she would say to those doubting my son’s commitment to his videos.

As for me, I will continue to provide my son with this fantastic platform to share his voice and support him in his endeavors. I will always be proud of him and his journey with ADHD. I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has watched and shared his videos. Because of you, a small spark has ignited into a powerful flame. Let’s keep it burning bright!
