The Evolving Financial Landscape

The traditional notion of the American Dream has shifted dramatically. With the decline of the middle class, soaring health insurance costs, expensive childcare, and a lack of paid maternity leave, many find it challenging to sustain a comfortable lifestyle on a single or even dual income. Today, it’s becoming increasingly common for individuals to juggle multiple income streams, whether that’s driving for ride-sharing services, utilizing coupons, or even donating plasma.

Understanding Multi-Level Marketing

When I first encountered friends promoting products on social media, I was put off. I quickly distanced myself from groups selling nail wraps and those promoting weight-loss shakes. However, I was hustling in my own way, running a public relations and writing business for over 15 years. I authored a book, expanded my services, and occasionally generated income through affiliate links on my blog, but it never felt like enough.

For traditional small business owners, the rollercoaster of financial highs and lows is a familiar ride. We often face unexpected expenses, whether due to medical emergencies or family activities. Launching a product line or starting a restaurant can be daunting and costly, with all the financial risks resting on your shoulders. However, with most MLMs—especially those with low entry costs—you can sidestep these pitfalls.

Five years ago, a friend introduced me to a new, mission-driven MLM company. Although intrigued, I hesitated, concerned about how it might affect my reputation as a business owner and author. Ultimately, I decided against it.

Years later, I reconsidered. This MLM offered products I genuinely believed in, aligned with my brand’s mission, and had a buy-in cost that was less than a dinner for two at a nice restaurant. I took the plunge, even reaching out to you on Facebook, despite our long absence. You might have ignored my message, or perhaps you appreciated the introduction to safer, more effective products. It’s those positive responses that motivate me, while I’ve learned to let go of the negativity.

Critiques often come from those closest to us. Some of my friends have firmly stated their loyalty to their favorite brands and are uninterested in my side hustle. Despite this, they remain supportive friends in countless other ways. I extend the same courtesy to my friends involved in MLMs or other sales ventures, even if I’m not interested in their offerings. I might explore their catalogs or simply decline while providing encouragement.

The argument often made about the earnings potential in MLMs is worth reiterating. If you’re going to invest in a spatula, handbag, or skincare product, wouldn’t you prefer to buy from a friend rather than a big box store? There’s a common misconception that MLM participants don’t earn much from their sales, but that’s not necessarily accurate. Personally, I earn up to 35% on my sales, and there’s no pressure to keep purchasing inventory. Should I choose to leave, I can simply take my products with me—no penalties, no overflowing garage of unsold items.

If MLMs don’t appeal to you, that’s perfectly fine. They require outgoing personalities and a genuine passion for the product. Not everyone will resonate with your choices. For me, the benefits have outweighed the drawbacks. I find it easier to manage my expenses, encourage friends to switch to healthier products, and donate a portion of my earnings to causes that matter to me. Plus, I’ve connected with a fantastic array of people—some of whom even opted for one-on-one consultations instead of shopping at high-end makeup counters.

While I may not become an MLM millionaire, this venture brings me joy and satisfaction. My clients are happy, and that’s what counts. Given my own unique challenges, this side hustle has proven to be a perfect fit.
