In recent times, conservative voices have taken to claiming a certain intellectual victory when they point out the perceived hypocrisy of liberals. They argue, “Liberals tout their open-mindedness, yet they react negatively when faced with opposing viewpoints.” I’m here to affirm their point: I am a liberal, and I am not open-minded at all. Let me explain why.
We live in a world where children and educators must live with the constant fear of violence in schools. Every tragedy prompts Congress to offer “thoughts and prayers,” yet nothing substantial is done. Gun legislation has repeatedly shown its effectiveness in reducing firearm-related deaths, but we remain fixated on the idea of personal gun ownership. I don’t know how to resolve this issue, and I am not open to debate on it: your guns do not take precedence over the lives of my children. My stance is firm.
When two individuals of the same sex or gender love one another and seek the same rights as heterosexual couples, they deserve that right. Their relationship is a matter of human dignity and personal choice, and it does not affect your life in any significant way—unless you appreciate the addition of another loving couple in your community. This issue is closed for discussion.
When a transgender individual wishes to use the restroom that aligns with their gender identity or seeks workplace protections, they should absolutely have that right. No argument against this has been persuasive to me. If you think I’m closed-minded on this topic, I proudly accept that label.
The tragic reality of unarmed Black individuals losing their lives at the hands of law enforcement is met with a defensive “blue line” mentality from some. If you choose to ignore the systemic racism present in our justice system, I can no longer respect your viewpoint. This conversation has reached a conclusion; there are no two sides to the issue of racism, a truth we recognized centuries ago. It’s 2023—if you haven’t caught up yet, now is the time to do so.
I do not identify as a “tolerant liberal.” I refuse to engage with false equivalences. What is a false equivalence, you ask? It’s when an argument attempts to blame both sides equally for a dispute, often to downplay one side’s wrongdoing. I will not entertain your arguments that undermine centuries of history and the suffering of countless individuals. So label me however you wish, but if your critique centers on my lack of open-mindedness, then I concede that point. I am not open-minded.
