A remarkable shift is taking place in the realm of body positivity. Women are proudly sharing their authentic selves by posting unfiltered images showcasing their cellulite, freckles, postpartum bodies, and more. This new wave of self-acceptance is a powerful movement—no longer are we comparing ourselves to the unrealistic ideals presented in media.
Women are redefining beauty and paving the way for younger generations to learn the importance of embracing themselves, imperfections included. One inspiring initiative leading this charge is the #SideProfileSelfie movement, spearheaded by writer Maya Thompson. Through this movement, our noses and side profiles are becoming part of the conversation about self-acceptance.
Maya points out that while we’ve made strides in how women view their bodies, our noses are often overlooked. Many still feel compelled to pose in specific ways to conceal their nose’s shape or size. I can relate to this feeling. When a picture was taken of my new tattoo, I hesitated to share it because I thought my nose looked like a ski slope. But I chose to post it anyway, reminding myself that my daughter shares this feature and I want her to feel beautiful in her own skin.
I reached out to some colleagues at Home Insemination Kit to gather their #SideProfileSelfie experiences. Here’s what they shared:
Lila Hart
Lila revealed that she had a dodgeball accident at ten, which altered her nose’s shape. “I have a bump now and feel like the Wicked Witch of the West,” she joked.
Tara Green
Tara expressed her belief that her nose is too sharp and pointed.
Sophie Mitchell
Sophie has always disliked her side profile, feeling self-conscious about her distinctive Italian nose.
Ella Brooks
Ella shared a picture with me, noting how others compliment her nose, while she secretly dislikes it.
In sharing our photos and stories, we recognized the beauty and strength in one another that we often fail to see in ourselves. It’s incredible how critical we can be of our own appearances. How many moments have we missed because we were self-conscious about our noses? Probably countless.
Maya is inspiring women globally to embrace their natural noses through the #SideProfileSelfie movement, encouraging them to post their images with pride. She admits that sharing her profile photo was daunting, revealing, “Even though I’ve learned to love my nose, putting it out there for everyone to see was still scary.” She worried about past perceptions but noted that overcoming such fears can lead to empowerment.
When we confront our insecurities and embrace our true selves, it radiates a type of attractiveness that is simply magnetic. Maya’s initiative has instigated a powerful response, with women everywhere reporting newfound confidence in an aspect of themselves they’ve struggled with their entire lives.
Let’s celebrate our side profiles, everyone! Remember, you are all beautiful just as you are.
