If your children are anything like mine, they often step into the car after school feeling both hungry and unusually quiet. (I suspect these two states are closely linked, so I recommend offering them a snack before diving into any of the questions below!)

Instead of the typical “What did you do at school today?” which usually results in a lackluster response, or the somewhat tired “Share one good (or bad) thing that happened today,” shake things up with these playful and engaging questions. They’re designed to spark lively conversations and get your kids chatting about their day!

  1. If you could relive today, what’s something you’d change?
  2. What’s one thing from today you wish you could erase from your memory?
  3. If you had a camera in school today, what moment would you want to capture?
  4. What book is your classmate reading during silent reading time?
  5. Who in your class do you wish you could learn more about?
  6. Do any classmates have parents stationed overseas? How can we support them?
  7. What kind of book display is currently featured in the school library?
  8. Who do you think is the most talented artist in your class, and what did they create last?
  9. Who proposed the best game to play at recess today?
  10. Which friend made you laugh in class today, and what did they say?
  11. Did anything happen in class today that made you feel sad? What was it?
  12. Did you notice anyone sitting alone at lunch? What can you do to include them tomorrow?
  13. Was anyone playing by themselves at recess? How can you reach out to them next time?
  14. If your teacher had a budget of $500 for the classroom, what do you think they would invest in?
  15. What kind of pet would you choose for your classroom if you could?
  16. Who in your class would make a fantastic teacher?
  17. Who would not make a great teacher? Why?
  18. If you had to teach a class tomorrow, who would you want as your assistant?
  19. What other profession do you believe your teacher would excel in? What would they struggle with?
  20. Did you almost break any school rules today? What stopped you?
  21. What classroom rule do you think needs to be added or changed?
  22. What do you think the playground needs more of to be better?
  23. Which adult at school made you laugh today, and what did they say?
  24. Did you hear any funny jokes today? Share one with me!
  25. What do you think your teacher did over the weekend? Don’t know? Ask them next week!
  26. What new thing did you learn today that we could look up together tonight?
  27. What topic do you wish you had explored more in class today?
  28. If you had the opportunity to teach a subject tomorrow, what would you choose?
  29. Share one kind action you plan to take tomorrow to brighten someone’s day.
  30. What’s one goal you want to achieve at school tomorrow?

Instead of overwhelming your kids with questions every day (which can lead to repetitive answers and silence), try putting these prompts on individual cards and placing them in a bowl. Your child can select one question every few days to discuss. Encourage them to create their own questions about your day, too, and toss those into the mix. This way, you both can engage in meaningful conversations!
