Recent studies suggest that expectant mothers might benefit greatly from midwife-led care during their pregnancies. According to a comprehensive review published in The Cochrane Library, women who chose midwives as their primary caregivers experienced fewer complications, such as preterm labor, and required less medical intervention during delivery.
The research team, led by Mia Thompson from the Women’s Health Division at Kings College London, analyzed data from 13 trials involving over 16,000 women. This included both low-risk and high-risk pregnancy groups. Their findings revealed that women under midwifery care were less likely to experience pregnancy loss before 24 weeks, deliver before 37 weeks, or require epidurals and assisted births. Additionally, they noted a decrease in episiotomies among these mothers. Interestingly, those cared for by midwives reported higher satisfaction throughout their pregnancies. While women with midwives did tend to be in labor about 30 minutes longer than those with medical care, they were no more likely to have C-sections.
Mia Thompson emphasized the importance of offering midwife-led care to all women unless there are significant medical risks involved. “Women should feel empowered to request this option,” she stated. This perspective aligns with findings from a 2011 study in The Lancet, which showed that trained midwives could safely perform early medical abortions, a topic that can be contentious. A recent report from the American College of Nurse-Midwives highlighted further benefits of midwifery care, such as lower C-section rates and increased breastfeeding success.
Interestingly, a survey we conducted revealed that while 13% of soon-to-be moms planned to use a midwife, a whopping 90% still expressed confidence in their OB/GYNs and would recommend their doctors to friends.
