When it comes to films that claim to capture the messy reality of motherhood, I often find myself let down. It seems there’s never a true representation on screen of what it really means to be a mom — from the stained clothes and tired bodies to the chaotic homes and sleepless nights.
Fortunately, that’s about to change. In the upcoming film “Tully,” Charlize Theron steps into the role of a mother, and it feels like a direct reflection of real life. I approached the trailer with skepticism, knowing Hollywood’s track record for misrepresenting parenting. However, Theron’s performance was a wake-up call — it was as if I was looking in a mirror (though let’s be honest, I don’t look like her).
Written by the talented Diablo Cody, who penned the beloved film “Juno,” the script brims with authenticity. Theron embodies a weary mom so convincingly, it must have taken a lot of effort to create that believable look since she is, after all, a stunning star. In the trailer, she resembles me during school drop-offs or those rushed grocery runs when I can’t remember if I put on deodorant.
This. Is. Motherhood.
Theron portrays Marlo, a frazzled mother of three, with her youngest being a newborn. Her brother, played by Kevin Johnson, surprises her with a night nanny named Tully to help navigate the early chaos of parenting. Although Marlo is initially hesitant about this kind of help, she soon develops a unique connection with Tully, who is thoughtful yet occasionally challenging, as described in the film’s synopsis. The cast also features David Smith as her husband.
In just two minutes of the trailer, we witness more genuine moments of motherhood than in countless other films combined. We see Theron accidentally drop her phone on her newborn’s head, spill freshly pumped milk, struggle to calm a crying baby, and deal with her kids’ probing questions about her body.
Are they spying on us? How do they know so much?
With the film set to hit theaters on April 20th, it’s the perfect excuse for a mom’s night out. You know you deserve it!
