The Utter Bliss of an Efficiently Organized Kitchen

A few months back, I accomplished what I once thought impossible: I finally emptied the laundry basket. Of course, my family and I aren’t living in a nudist colony, so that fleeting sense of pride quickly dissipated, and I found myself back where I started. But for that brief moment? I felt like a total rockstar (alright, maybe more like a washed-up one-hit wonder, but still).

Last Saturday night, I stumbled upon that exhilarating feeling again, this time in my kitchen. After moving into a new home not long ago, we’ve been relying too much on takeout and single-use plastics, which I’m not proud to admit. Thankfully, renovations are wrapping up, and I can almost taste the delicious home-cooked meals waiting at the end of this chaotic journey. While we anxiously await the completion of our cabinets, shelves, and backsplash, I decided to tackle what I could – the drawers and pantry.

First Task: Tame the Coffee Chaos.

I’m not a heavy coffee drinker at home, but I wanted to ensure that everything my friends or guests might need was neatly organized yet still out of my daily line of sight. Enter a set of bamboo deep drawer organizers. Without these nifty little wooden compartments, I would’ve ended up with nothing more than a well-caffeinated junk drawer. Instead, it transformed into a mini coffee shop right in my kitchen.

Speaking of drawers, reaching into the “mystery knife drawer” at our old place was always a perilous endeavor, often resulting in accidental cuts. But now, with a dedicated knife dock, every blade has its designated spot, significantly reducing my need for Bandaids.

Another kitchen dilemma I faced was cereal. Is it really that difficult to fold the plastic bag and close the cardboard box? Apparently, it is, as my kids can’t seem to grasp the concept. Thankfully, I introduced cereal dispensers that have not only eradicated the morning madness but also allow me to buy generic store-brand cereal without them noticing the difference.

While our kitchen won’t be fully finished for a few more months, these small adjustments have made a remarkable difference. If you’re in a similar situation, perhaps these tips can help you too. A special thanks to the Container Store for making my Saturday night so enjoyable and for providing kitchen drawers that make me giddy every time I open them (and yes, I realize I might need to get out more – I’ll work on that).

While waiting for renovations to be completed, these small changes can lead to a more enjoyable cooking experience.
