In a powerful continuation of their advocacy, a group of 50 high school students from Wisconsin is setting out on a 50-mile march from Madison to Janesville, the hometown of U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan. Following the emotionally charged March For Our Lives event, these students are determined to keep the dialogue surrounding gun control alive.
The students, marching approximately 13 miles each day over four days, plan to arrive at Traxler Park in Janesville on March 28, where they hope to draw attention to their cause. Their journey symbolizes the four-day waiting period they are advocating for gun purchases, emphasizing the need for legislative change.
“We’ve seen how quickly media and politicians can shift focus after tragedies caused by gun violence,” stated co-founder Emma Harris. “Having grown up in an era marked by school shootings and subsequent inaction, we are committed to ensuring this time is different.” As they march, the students are sharing the stories of children who have lost their lives to gun violence through social media, aiming to personalize the statistics and maintain public awareness.
Co-leader Jake Thompson expressed their frustrations, saying, “We refuse to let the tragedy in Parkland fade into another statistic where inaction prevails, followed only by empty ‘thoughts and prayers.’ We will hold elected officials accountable, starting with Paul Ryan, who has the opportunity to initiate real change. If he and others do not act, the youth of America will make our voices heard at the ballot box this November.”
Despite the seriousness of their mission, the students are also injecting moments of joy into their journey, reminding everyone that they are still kids. They are calling on Ryan, who accepted nearly $172,000 from gun rights organizations during the 2016 election cycle, to stop taking NRA contributions and recognize the significant efforts of young advocates like themselves.
