Hey, Careless Drivers—Take It Easy!

The buzz in our neighborhood is all about me. Honestly, I can’t blame anyone for talking; if I saw myself in the street yelling at cars like I’ve lost my mind, I’d be gossiping too. But there’s a good reason for my antics: people can’t seem to drive responsibly.

They zoom through our quiet streets where kids dart around like playful puppies. It’s as if the bright red stop sign doesn’t exist for them. I’m not referring to a casual roll-through; I mean they’re speeding like they’re on a racetrack. Unless every driver is on the brink of delivering a baby, this behavior is unacceptable.

On any given day, you’ll find anywhere from three to eight kids on my front lawn. They’re playing games like tag, soccer, baseball, and even having water balloon battles. While I stand there, handing out popsicles or chatting with a neighbor, I can’t help but yell at the reckless drivers, “Slow down!” or “Are you serious?” My outbursts have even led to some colorful new vocabulary for my kids. Before I can even prepare my stern look, my five-year-old might chime in, “What’s the hurry, jerk?”

It’s a mix of embarrassment and pride.

Sometimes, I take a stand right in the street, forcing drivers to slow down. On one occasion, I even snapped a picture of a license plate. More than once, I was shocked to discover I was scolding a neighbor. But honestly, I couldn’t care less; my priority is my children’s safety.

Though I’ve received plenty of dirty looks and rude gestures, no one confronted me—until today. While unloading groceries, a black car pulled up beside me. The window rolled down, and a woman I didn’t recognize said, “I’ve been waiting to talk to you for months.”

Uh-oh.

“Yeah, you yelled at me to slow down,” she said.

“Oh?” I stammered, feeling a bit defensive but also wary of her reaction.

“I just wanted to apologize. You were right.”

Her confession took me by surprise. She admitted to giving me a rude gesture at the time but later realized she was speeding, especially for a residential area. She had been eager to let me know that she now drives more cautiously.

Well, how about that?

So, while my kids are out there chasing after balls, you can find me out there too, chasing down irresponsible drivers. A mom’s got to do what a mom’s got to do.
