Recently, Jake Anderson shared a heartfelt post on Facebook about his cousin’s son, Leo, who faced ridicule at school for carrying a lunchbox adorned with cats. It seems that society has decided that felines are somehow off-limits for boys. Anderson wanted to empower Leo by showing him that he could embrace his interests without fear of judgment.
“Unfortunately, because of its design, or perhaps because it features cats, Leo was teased by his classmates,” Anderson explained. “He even considered not taking his lunch anymore to avoid the taunts.”
Determined to support Leo, Anderson purchased the same kitty lunchbox for himself and proudly took it to his conservative office environment. He shared Leo’s story with his colleagues, who unanimously agreed that the lunchbox was fantastic and encouraged everyone to pursue their passions.
The reality of gender stereotypes is that one’s anatomy doesn’t dictate interests or values. Discouraging children from exploring activities or interests that don’t fit the outdated “blue is for boys, pink is for girls” mentality only stifles their spirits. Plus, cat culture is majorly trending right now, so Leo is definitely ahead of the curve.
“I adore my new lunchbox and hope Leo and all boys out there see that their passions and self-expression should never be a source of shame,” Anderson concluded.
