If you’ve ever stepped foot in Disneyland, you know it truly lives up to its reputation as “the happiest place on Earth.” On March 29th, visitors to the park experienced an extra dose of magic when they encountered a delightful group of service dogs sporting adorable Mickey Mouse hats, clearly having a fantastic time.

Canine Companions for Independence is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing highly trained assistance dogs free of charge to individuals with disabilities. They take these dogs to theme parks like Disneyland to help them develop patience and focus amidst the bustling environment filled with sounds, crowds, and excitement, preparing them for the challenges they may face in real-life situations.

Meet the Pups

Essie, Aryssa, Chekov, and Ortega are just a few of the pups who know how to blend work with fun:

According to one of the puppy raisers, Mark Thompson, “Taking the puppies to places like Disneyland provides invaluable experiences for them. They encounter a variety of sounds, smells, and people, which is essential for their training.”

The organization’s mission is to “open up new opportunities and new possibilities, spreading incredible joy by uniting people with dogs in a program that fosters greater independence and confidence.” Their training covers various categories, including dogs that assist adults with physical disabilities, hearing dogs, facility dogs that work in educational or healthcare settings, and skilled companions for both children and adults with physical, cognitive, and developmental challenges.

Fun with Disney Characters

Naturally, Disney characters couldn’t resist joining in on the fun, as these adorable pups are impossible to overlook.

Volunteers typically care for puppies for about a year and a half before they receive professional training at a regional center. Given the extensive training these dogs undergo, it’s only fitting that they get to enjoy a special outing like this, even if it serves a training purpose.

The dogs clearly relished their time at the park, posing for countless heartwarming photos (with plenty of dog treats on hand!). They also enjoyed plenty of breaks and naps throughout the day.

We have no doubt that these incredible pups will be showered with love and affection for the rest of their lives, and they truly deserve it.
