Portland, Oregon, is a city that truly embodies the essence of uniqueness. With a culture that embraces everything from craft beer to quirky attractions, it’s a destination that offers an unforgettable experience. Here are some lesser-known facts that make Portland a must-visit:
- Within the city’s boundaries lies a dormant volcano.
- The carpet at Portland International Airport has gained a cult following, and many visitors, including myself, find it picture-worthy.
- Every year, Portland organizes a World Naked Bike Ride, celebrating body positivity.
- The city boasts the highest number of microbreweries in the world.
- You can spot tiny toy horses scattered throughout the city, because, well, why not?
Portland is vibrant, eccentric, and full of life. Recently, a few of us from the Home Insemination Kit team embarked on a trip to uncover the best of what this city has to offer. Here’s our curated list:
1. Powell’s City of Books
Known as the largest independent bookstore globally, Powell’s is a book lover’s paradise. You could easily spend days exploring its vast collection.
2. The Nines Hotel
For a luxurious stay, look no further. This hotel surpassed all our expectations—our room was on the fourteenth floor and offered stunning views.
3. Jake’s Famous Crawfish
Enjoy delectable food in a cozy setting with friendly staff. We lingered here for hours, enjoying our meal without feeling rushed.
4. Urban Farmer
Located within The Nines, this restaurant made breakfast in bed a delightful routine for us. The Eggs Benedict is a must-try.
5. Kiva Tea, Cafe and Spa
We indulged in a seasonal special that included a massage, scalp treatment, and a delightful tea service. You’ll feel pampered, and trust me, you must say yes to the scalp massage.
6. Matador
If you’re craving Mexican cuisine, this is the place to be. We had an incredible experience with their margaritas, fresh guacamole, and even Brussels sprouts that you absolutely need to try.
7. Mudra Massage
For a unique experience, try ashiatsu massage, where therapists use their feet to provide a rejuvenating treatment. It was one of the best massages I’ve ever had.
After indulging in all the amazing food and experiences, we made sure to hit up Sephora and Blue Mercury for skincare essentials, along with a visit to Anthropologie, all conveniently located downtown.
Before heading home, I picked up journals for my kids from Powell’s. My daughter was thrilled with hers, which featured painted llamas, and filled it with everything she loved. I can already picture her living in Portland one day. I can’t wait to return—Pip’s Doughnuts is at the top of my list for next time!
