For reasons I have yet to fully grasp, I tend to come across as approachable. While navigating through a store, it’s not uncommon for strangers to initiate a conversation with me. These exchanges are often mundane and lack any hint of flirtation, primarily involving older adults or peers. After each encounter, I find myself pondering, “How did that just happen?”
Through introspection, I’ve pinpointed certain physical traits that likely contribute to this perception. With my round face, rosy cheeks, and a soft figure, I may resemble a modern-day Mrs. Claus. However, the most telling feature is my inherent resting smile. Even as I write this, I notice a gentle smile on my face, despite the distractions around me.
This has been my reality for quite some time. My partner, Chris, is a classic introvert and is often uncomfortable with the spontaneous interactions I attract. Our usual pastime of people-watching turns awkward when those being observed approach us for a chat.
Yet, this trait has proven beneficial in my career as a nurse. A friendly demeanor is invaluable in my profession, especially in high-pressure situations. I hope that during a crisis, a calm and welcoming face can provide some comfort, even if the individual is a stranger.
Nonetheless, I can’t help but covet those who possess the elusive “Resting Bitch Face” (RBF). These individuals can stroll through the grocery store without the need to discuss the merits of their favorite pasta sauce with every passerby. There are moments when I long for solitude, but my Midwestern upbringing makes it difficult to extricate myself from unwanted conversations, regardless of my yearning for silence.
Certainly, there are more significant challenges to face in life. It’s not that I’m inherently unfriendly; I just find many social interactions to be tiresome. I prefer engaging in discussions that I initiate, but it seems that my demeanor invites unsolicited chatter.

In summary, while my natural approachability has its benefits, it can be overwhelming at times. Balancing my desire for solitude with my innate friendliness continues to be a challenge, leading me to admire those with a more guarded exterior.
