A few months ago, I accomplished a feat I never thought possible: I finally emptied the laundry basket. Naturally, my family isn’t living in a nudist paradise, so that fleeting sense of triumph quickly dissipated, leaving me back where I started. But for that brief moment? I felt like a superstar. Alright, perhaps more like a one-hit wonder who had faded from the limelight, but still.
Last Saturday night, I stumbled upon that exhilarating feeling once more, this time in my kitchen.
After relocating to a new home, my family and I had become overly reliant on takeout and disposable items—something I’m not particularly proud of. Fortunately, the renovations are nearing completion, and I can almost taste the home-cooked meals that await us. As we impatiently await the installation of cabinets, shelves, and a backsplash, I decided to focus on what I could control: the drawers and pantry.
First Task: Taming the Coffee Chaos
While I’m not a heavy coffee drinker at home, I wanted to ensure that any guests would have everything they might need readily available yet neatly tucked away. Enter a set of bamboo deep drawer organizers—transforming what could have been a chaotic coffee corner into a functional, almost café-like space.
Next, I tackled the dreaded knife drawer. In our previous home, reaching for a knife was akin to entering a danger zone, often resulting in accidental cuts. Now, with a knife dock in place, each blade has a designated spot, drastically reducing my need for Band-Aids.
Another ongoing frustration has been cereal. Is it really so difficult to fold the plastic bag and close the cardboard box? Apparently, my children find that concept challenging. Thanks to new cereal dispensers, those messy mornings are a thing of the past, and I’ve successfully eliminated one point of contention at breakfast. Bonus: I can now buy generic cereals without my kids ever knowing the difference!
While our kitchen renovation is still a work in progress, these small changes have significantly improved our daily routine—perhaps they could do the same for you. A special thanks to the Container Store for making my Saturday night so enjoyable and for creating kitchen drawers that bring me joy every time I open them (and yes, I realize I should probably have a more active social life. I’ll get to that).
