5 Diaper Bag Essentials That Will Come to the Rescue

You never know what surprises a little one might throw your way, but by packing these diaper bag must-haves, you’ll be ready for just about anything.

I remember the first time my partner and I ventured out with our newborn, thinking we could manage without the diaper bag for a short trip. “It’s only an hour,” we said. Boy, were we mistaken! We quickly learned that an hour can turn into a disaster without a fresh diaper, a handful of wipes, and maybe even an extra outfit for both baby and dad.

Then there was the time I took my “potty trained” toddler to the park, only to discover that we were not quite there yet—and, of course, I had forgotten the diaper bag again. Let’s just say that Starbucks napkins don’t quite cut it!

Through many of these “rookie parent” moments, I’ve figured out the essentials that every diaper bag should contain. Here are five must-haves no parent should ever leave home without:

  1. Wipes: You might think this is a no-brainer, but wipes are not just for diaper changes! They’re perfect for cleaning sticky hands, wiping down highchairs, and even tackling those unexpected juice spills on your favorite shirt (or your friend’s pristine couch).
  2. Hand Sanitizer: Kids are magnetically drawn to germs, especially at their height! From escalator rails to doorknobs, they’ll touch everything. I often find myself shouting, “Don’t touch anything!” while simultaneously dousing them in hand sanitizer.
  3. A Bottle of Water: Not just for hydration, this can also be a lifesaver for unexpected messes. If the wipes dry out because someone left the lid off, a bit of water can help salvage the situation. You might even need it if your little one decides to snack on something they shouldn’t—like the time my toddler thought a cigarette butt was a treat (yikes!).
  4. Plastic Bags: These are crucial for containing any wet or soiled items, be it clothes or diapers. Trust me, you’ll be grateful for a bag when the inevitable mess happens—whether it’s a dirty diaper or, well, something more unpleasant.
  5. A Change of Clothes: Always pack a spare outfit for your child—and yourself! You never know when a diaper blowout or a spaghetti dinner could turn into a fashion emergency. I learned this the hard way at church with my little one!

Of course, this list is just the tip of the iceberg. Snacks, toys, and even some pain relievers might also be necessary depending on your child. But I’d take wipes over toys any day!
