In a year marked by relentless winter conditions, meteorologist Jake Collins has become a voice for many who are fed up with the cold. If you’re residing in almost any region of the U.S., chances are you’re bundled up in layers, lamenting the prolonged winter that seems to have no end. It feels as if spring has been completely bypassed, leading us to wonder if we’ll finally warm up around mid-July—just as stores begin displaying holiday decorations.
On a recent Tuesday, Collins, who reports for Channel 9, was delivering his weather update when he expressed his frustration after his colleagues reacted negatively to his predictions. Attempting to find a silver lining, he remarked, “It could be worse.” However, his co-workers’ groans left him understandably irritated. “You all are bringing me down,” he exclaimed. “After I wrap up the seven-day forecast, it’s always the same: ‘Ugh, oh no, this is terrible!’” Given that he’s the morning weather anchor, he faces this barrage of complaints at 4:30 a.m., 5:30 a.m., and again at 6:30 a.m., with his patience wearing thin.
Collins continued, “You expect me to be cheerful for five hours straight? This is just miserable.” Originally hailing from sunny California, it’s clear why he feels overwhelmed by the ongoing winter malaise that has gripped the nation.
As much as we want to blame someone for the dreary weather, Collins is just as powerless as the rest of us. “What do you want me to do, lie? I can predict 70-degree days every time, if that’s what you want,” he exclaimed, gesturing animatedly.
This winter has been particularly punishing, with the South battling Winter Storm Benji and the East Coast facing the aftermath of Winter Storm Grayson and multiple nor’easters that brought record snowfall. Now, in mid-April, the Midwest is bracing for yet another foot of snow. It’s simply overwhelming.
As he dissects the upcoming forecast, Collins highlights a temperature of 60 degrees, his frustration palpable. “Here’s a 60, but I’m not sure if that’s good enough for you,” he said in exasperation. “Maybe I’ll let you down with the seven-day forecast in a bit.”
Hang in there, Jake. Winter can’t last forever—right?
