In a significant ruling, a federal judge has affirmed that it is the government’s responsibility to reunite immigrant families separated due to the controversial “zero-tolerance” policy enforced by the previous administration. In June, a report revealed that over 2,000 children had been separated from their parents, leading to widespread outrage from advocacy groups and citizens alike. Currently, more than 400 immigrant parents have been deported while their children remain in U.S. detention centers. Federal Judge Mark Thompson rejected this proposal emphatically, stating, “The reality is that nearly 500 parents have not been located. Many were expelled from the country without their children. This situation arises directly from the government’s actions and their failure to adequately track and reunite families.” He stressed that every unidentified parent results in a child who may be left permanently without their family, a direct consequence of the administration’s policies.
Judge Thompson mandated that the government appoint officials to oversee the reunification process and develop a detailed plan to assist those parents who were deported alone. He pointed out that only 12 or 13 out of the nearly 500 parents have been located so far, calling this an “unacceptable” outcome.
In response, the ACLU criticized the administration’s attempt to transfer responsibility, asserting their commitment to helping reunite families while refusing to accept blame for the crisis that was created by the government. “The federal government has significantly more resources at its disposal to aid in reunification than any non-profit organization,” the ACLU stated. “They cannot shift the blame for the consequences of their unconstitutional family separation policy onto others.”
