In our home, crafting is a frequent activity, and it often raises eyebrows. Friends and family gaze at our walls adorned with colorful creations and ask, “Do you really…?” or “Isn’t it…?” To which my response is a resounding yes. OH, ABSOLUTELY YES.
The reality is that crafting with kids can be quite exasperating. It’s disheartening when you’ve meticulously planned an exciting art project, anticipating a delightful afternoon of creativity, only for the kids to breeze through it in mere moments and immediately ask what’s next.
It can be incredibly frustrating when a child accidentally knocks over a cup of paint water, spilling it all over the craft table and ruining another child’s artwork, leading to chaos and tears.
Additionally, sibling squabbles are a common occurrence as they all scramble for the same materials at the same time, insisting that the success of their masterpiece hinges on immediate access to those supplies.
And let’s not forget the excessive use of materials. You remind them to be mindful, but somehow you’re left without enough glue to finish that beautiful mermaid because someone decided to pour it all out.
Then there’s the inevitable glitter disaster caused by a well-meaning toddler who thinks it’s the perfect time to unleash a sparkly storm all over the living room furniture.
So, yes, the questions about crafting resonate with me. Yes to “Do you really…?” and “Isn’t it…?” and “Doesn’t it make you want to…?” Absolutely yes.
Yet, despite the frustrations, I continue to craft with my kids. Because the joy of witnessing one single artwork can overshadow all the challenges that arise during the process. Just take this spectacular painting created by my little artist:
