Today, as you celebrate turning 12, I want to take a moment to share some thoughts with you. You’ll always be my little boy, the one with those adorable, expressive eyes that remind me of Oreo cookies.
Happy Birthday! It’s incredible to witness how quickly you’re growing up. Just two weeks ago, you were still shorter than me, and now you tower over me. Your voice is shifting, and you’re sporting a faint mustache that adds to your charm. It feels like you’ve transformed overnight, leaving behind the baby fat and stepping into a leaner, taller version of yourself.
No matter how much you change, you will always hold a special place in my heart as my baby.
From the moment you joined our family as the youngest sibling, you brought joy to everyone around you. Your brother adored you beyond measure. You followed him everywhere, eagerly watching as he played his games on his DS, cheering him on with every victory. He protected you from creepy crawlies and taught you all about Pokémon, while you both shared sushi, toys, and a room filled with love. I still cherish the nights I’d find you both asleep, holding hands across the gap between your beds.
However, life took a difficult turn when your brother fell ill with brain cancer. You were often left with your Aunt, and I could see the confusion in your eyes as everything around you shifted. Your brother changed physically, requiring a wheelchair and lengthy hospital stays, but your love for him remained steadfast. You were always eager to be by his side, talking about Pokémon and playing with the stuffed animals you both adored. I remember how you climbed into his hospital bed and fell asleep next to him, holding on tight.
For a while, you were an only child, and that role didn’t fit you well. You were anxious and lonely, never wanting to leave my side. But then, your little sister arrived, and you stepped into the role of a big brother with ease. You’ve become an incredible protector and teacher, passing down the lessons you learned from your own brother. You guide her through Pokémon and sushi, and she looks up to you as her hero.
I am constantly amazed by your resilience and character. Your kindness, compassion, and curiosity inspire me every day. In many ways, you are my example of how to be a strong and good person. Did you know that you quite literally saved my life? You were the reason I got out of bed after your brother passed away. Your infectious smile has a way of transforming my world, and I am grateful for your courage that helps me face challenges.
You dream of becoming a doctor, actor, comedian, research scientist, or even a theoretical physicist — and I wholeheartedly believe you can achieve any of those aspirations. You have a great group of friends who accept you for who you are, especially your best buddy, who brings sunshine wherever he goes. The bond you share is something special, and I hope you always cherish those friendships.
Take your time growing up; there’s no need to rush. Embrace your silliness, stay innocent for a little while longer, and enjoy the little wonders of life. Recently, I chuckled when you said, “I know how babies are made. The man puts his ding-dong into the woman’s slipperslap, and then a baby comes out.” I have to say, that’s quite the creative phrase! You may not fully understand it yet, and that’s perfectly fine. While you excel academically, I find comfort knowing you’re not in a hurry to grow up too fast.
I appreciate your nerdy side, your dance moves, and even our playful debates (you’re really good at those!). You make me laugh daily, bring me happiness, and fill me with pride. You make my job as your mom feel easier, and I’m grateful for that.
My wish for you this birthday is to discover your place in this vast world without feeling overwhelmed by all the choices. Stay close to those who love you, keep a calm heart, and pursue happiness, whatever that may look like for you. Remember, your past does not define your future.
Thank you for being you. And promise me, you’ll never be too grown up to snuggle and watch Saturday Night Live with me on the couch. Also, thanks in advance for letting me stay in a tiny house in your backyard when I’m old!
Stay amazing, my dear son, and have an unforgettable birthday!
With all my love,
Mom
