I Embrace Filtering My Online Photos, And I’m Proud of It

I can already predict the backlash this piece will generate. “Hypocrite.” “Phony.” “What a clueless person.” These are just a few of the likely labels I’ll receive—not necessarily from you, but certainly from some judgmental souls out there.

But you know what? If you were to ask my friends and family, they would say that about 95% of what I share—both in my writing and through photos—captures the essence of who I am, my partner, our generally cheerful kids, and the delightful chaos of our daily lives. My posts are genuine, reflecting my true self in the same manner I’d speak to you during morning drop-off or at a casual gathering.

Let’s be honest—I DO use filters on my pictures. Most of them, in fact. From “vibrant” to “moody,” and everything in between, I filter my photos to enhance their appeal. And I’m absolutely unapologetic about it—and you shouldn’t feel guilty either.

Not even a little bit. Why? Because applying filters, in moderation and with good taste, doesn’t diminish our authenticity. Here’s why:

  • Emotion Remains Unfiltered: No matter how many filters you apply, the genuine emotion in a photo—like your child’s joyful grin—is always real.
  • Connections Can’t Be Faked: If the bond between people in a photo feels forced, it will come across, regardless of the filter.
  • A Confidence Boost: Let’s face it, we all deserve a little pick-me-up, and a well-chosen filter can provide just that.
  • Life’s Messiness: Parent life can be chaotic. A filter can help you present those moments in a slightly more polished way, making it easier to navigate through the wildness.
  • Highlighting Beauty: Filters can elevate an image that might otherwise lack appeal, showcasing the beauty in our everyday lives.
  • Curiosity is Key: Filters keep others intrigued about your life. Who doesn’t enjoy a little mystery? “Is she naturally that stunning, or does she use a filter?”
  • #NoFilter Appeal: Let’s be honest, the more you filter, the more your unfiltered photos stand out.

While parenting often feels like a balancing act of control and chaos, the reality is that many aspects are simply beyond our reach. From grocery store meltdowns to your child’s insistence on wearing the same outfit repeatedly—these moments are unpredictable.

What is within your control, however, is how you choose to present your images. So leverage that power and don’t hesitate to use any filter that enhances your shared moments. There’s no reason to feel ashamed about it.

In summary, filtering your photos is a personal choice that allows you to express and enhance your life’s story. It doesn’t make you inauthentic; it simply adds a layer of creativity to your memories. Embrace it, and share your life in the way that feels right for you.
