Meet Jake, a new dad from San Diego with a 9-month-old named Oliver. He’s here to share some honest insights about the whirlwind that is parenthood.

I wish I had understood just how much my life would transform. The moment Oliver arrived, everything shifted. Suddenly, I was responsible for a little human who needed around-the-clock attention. It’s a big adjustment! I’ve always loved being outdoors—cycling, hiking, you name it—but finding time for those activities feels impossible these days. Now that Oliver can sit up in the jogging stroller, I can take him along, which is a nice compromise. I hope to carve out some solo time in the future when he’s older.

I wish I knew that my social life would take a hit (but honestly, it’s not the end of the world). We used to hang out with our couple friends for happy hours, but now we find ourselves drawn to friends who have kids. It’s a natural shift, and over time, our circle has changed. Thankfully, we still keep in touch with our child-free friends, but our gatherings often include little ones now. It’s all about adapting!

I wish I realized how important it would be to nurture my relationship with my partner. Watching my wife, Emily, embrace motherhood has made me appreciate her even more. (Check out her perspective on being a mom here.) While our bond has grown stronger, we also have to make an effort to ensure we don’t lose sight of our relationship amidst all the baby chaos. It’s easy to let everything revolve around Oliver, but we need to prioritize us too.

I wish I knew that our home would need a total makeover—not just the baby’s room. We live in a cozy two-bedroom apartment, and once we welcomed Oliver, I quickly realized how much baby gear we’d accumulate. So, I converted our spare room into a nursery. It’s small, but it fits our needs. To make space for all the essentials, I even built a storage shed in the backyard for all the extra stuff. I certainly didn’t expect to need three different strollers!

I wish I knew how well my wife and I would work together as a team. Having friends with kids was a huge help—they shared all the insider tips we needed. Emily was full of questions during her pregnancy, while I tended to figure things out as we went along. It’s a different experience for each parent, but we balance each other out.
