Why I Support Kid-Free Flights

Whenever the topic of children on airplanes arises, it often sparks strong opinions. I remember when author Jake Miller expressed his frustrations about kids on flights—it got me thinking. But honestly, I’m all for kid-free zones on planes or even flights that don’t allow babies, similar to what some Asian airlines are trying out.

My stance isn’t about catering to those who prefer traveling without kids; it’s about making life easier for parents like me who have to fly with little ones. Traveling with babies or young children is already a struggle, and adding the pressure of sitting next to someone who clearly wishes they were anywhere else is overwhelming.

Let’s be real: most parents with fussy babies dread being on that flight as much as the other passengers do. No one wants to be in a situation where they can’t soothe their crying child. What are you supposed to do, hide in the lavatory with your baby until the seatbelt sign turns off? Or maybe buy every passenger a drink as a peace offering? (Believe it or not, I’ve heard of parents doing that!)

I’ve traveled extensively with my kids, often solo. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when the child behind you is crying or kicking your seat. Or how annoying it is to get showered with snack crumbs when the toddler next to you is determined to open their bag by themselves. And let’s not even get started on diaper blowouts or spit-up disasters. But keep this in mind: that mom is likely doing her very best.

However, not everyone is against kids on planes. I’ve been fortunate to sit next to some really kind strangers while traveling with my children. There was the retired pilot who helped me out while I nursed my baby. And the sweet grandma who played peek-a-boo with my cranky infant. Even a young lady with bright nails who held my son while I dealt with a bout of airsickness during turbulence. Plus, the business travelers who helped me fold my stroller at security were lifesavers.

Thanks to these thoughtful strangers, my flight experiences were much more pleasant as a stressed-out mom.

What about you? What has your experience been like when traveling with kids? Do you think kid-free flights are a good idea?
