Discovering I Have Four Unknown Siblings

To this day, I still identify as an only child, a title I assumed throughout my upbringing. My childhood was spent with just my mom, but unbeknownst to me, I actually have two half-brothers and two half-sisters scattered across several states.

To set the stage, my father has always been a sporadic presence in my life. He grew up in Florida but moved to the Midwest with my mom soon after I was born. However, by the time I was three, he returned to his hometown, leaving us behind. For most of my formative years, I had no way to reach him. Birthdays and holidays came and went without a single call or a means to contact him—a confusing reality for a young child.

My mom made numerous attempts to locate him, often at my urging. After nearly four years of silence, she finally managed to track down his phone number. But when she called, it was not my father who picked up; instead, it was a babysitter who inadvertently revealed the existence of my siblings.

To our astonishment, we learned that not only did I have two younger siblings, but also an older sibling, six years my senior. My mom was completely unaware of their existence until that moment. Despite everything, I approached my father with a child’s trust, hoping to forge some kind of relationship. A year or two later, I met my three siblings at Disney World, along with another “friend” who would later turn out to be my sister, oblivious to her true identity.

In a twist of irony, my father’s actions were less than admirable. He had an affair with my mom’s best friend, resulting in this sister, who is just a few days younger than me. This woman’s husband, who is unable to have children, has allowed my sister to grow up under a falsehood, believing her dad is her biological father. I only discovered this truth as an adult and have been sworn to secrecy ever since.

Sometimes, I wonder what it would be like for her to learn the truth. What if she eventually finds out and realizes I knew all along? How devastating would that be? Yet, when I compare my father to her dad, I feel a sense of relief. Despite the lies, her dad has treated her well, something my siblings and I missed out on with our own father, who was often absent. Why would I shatter that illusion for her?

So, I choose to love her from afar, along with my other siblings. However, not knowing them personally leaves a void in my life. When you have estranged siblings, you can’t help but contemplate the bond you might have shared if circumstances were different.

Promises of family reunions often fall flat, leaving us awkwardly exchanging obligatory “I love yous.” We truly care for each other; we’re family, after all, but we lack the intimacy of a shared childhood.

As we enter this busy phase of life, with most of us now parents, I wish my children could experience the joy of a house filled with cousins running around—something I never had. Unfortunately, my siblings reside nearly a thousand miles away, living in separate worlds from mine.

Even with the distance and lost time, my heart remains open to them. I can only hope for the chance to truly know them one day.
