Designed by artists Mia Johnson and Clara Evans, and brought to life through animation by Leo Stone of Creative Studio and Ava Mitchell from DRASTIK GmbH, this multi-layered mandala art piece takes us through time, highlighting significant milestones in women’s history. The initial layer reflects the global women’s movements of the late 19th century, alongside the labor struggles of the 1930s. A word of caution: with 35 impactful figures woven into the artwork, you might need to replay it several times to catch all the details.
“Merging history with art, we carefully considered each of the 35 women and their placement within the mandala,” Mitchell explained. The next segment honors the influential women from the 1950s to the 1980s, a pivotal era that saw substantial advancements in gender equality. “Starting from the core, the Doodle illustrates the challenges women faced across different decades. The overarching message is a powerful reminder of the relentless fight for freedom that has shaped our present,” Mitchell added.
The concluding layer of the Doodle represents women from the 1990s to today. “Our inspiration stemmed from the rich history of International Women’s Day, reflecting its humble beginnings and how the movement has flourished over time,” Johnson noted. “It was essential to visually represent the multitude of women involved at each phase, from the Suffragettes to contemporary leaders, showcasing their expanding freedoms and rights.”
In addition to the Doodle, Google shared intriguing search trends linked to International Women’s Day. Notably, interest in women’s empowerment in the U.S. has surged by over 330% since 2004. Searches for phrases like “first woman to…” have revealed fascinating insights, with the top queries being “run for president,” “win a Nobel Prize,” “dunk in the WNBA,” “vote,” and “run the Boston Marathon.”
Specific names have dominated Google searches, reflecting the strong presence of women in various fields. Leading the pack were:
- Top athlete: Serena Williams
- Top musician: Taylor Swift
- Top author: Toni Morrison
- Top comedian: Awkwafina
Google also provided valuable statistics on the interests of working moms, stay-at-home moms, and single moms, highlighting the current priorities of women today.
As stated by UN Women, the theme for International Women’s Day 2020 is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.” This theme aligns with UN Women’s multi-generational campaign, Generation Equality, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This landmark framework, established in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, is recognized as a significant blueprint for empowering women and girls globally.
