Today marks a significant milestone—we’re officially letting you embark on your next adventure, just as we envisioned, hoped, and dreamed about since the day we found out you were joining our family.
As I watched you prepare for this moment, packing your bags and planning outings with your new friends, I was flooded with memories that feel so vivid. I recall your tiny fingers curling around my pinky as we navigated the streets, our evenings spent peering out the window waiting for Dad to return home, or those hilarious moments when you’d try to “drive” his car during pretend play, stuffing his CD player with quarters. How could I forget the time you called me a “stupid old lady” in a fit of toddler rage, only to rush into my arms, tears streaming down your cheeks? I cherish those nights when I’d sit in the doorway and watch your dad read Harry Potter to you, or the joyous afternoons filled with your exuberant singing while you gamed with friends.
The ritual of saying goodnight transformed over the years—from long cuddles that left me reluctant to leave your side to quick kisses on the cheek and the occasional peek through your slightly ajar door to ensure Netflix was off and you were tucked in safely.
It feels surreal to send you off today, wishing, in a strange twist, that you won’t be back to live with us—because that would mean you’re chasing your dreams. I’ve loved you from the moment I knew you existed, and that love will last forever; you are an integral part of me.
Here’s my heartfelt advice as you step into this new chapter:
- Rise. Every morning, greet the day like the sun, even when it feels dark. Confront every challenge and heartache with courage, and rise above anyone who tries to bring you down.
- Love. Surround yourself with those who appreciate you for who you are, no strings attached. Pour your heart into nurturing those relationships, find joy in what you do, and let that passion drive you to work harder than ever. And always, love yourself—your worth is yours to define.
- Be Brave. Have the courage to pursue your long-held dreams, to be open and vulnerable, and to embrace love and let it embrace you back.
- Give Grace. Extend kindness to yourself when you stumble, and to others when they let you down. Understand that there will be tough days; it’s okay to retreat under the covers and feel overwhelmed. Just remember to rise again afterward.
- Trust. Trust in your abilities to seize opportunities and take risks. You are strong and capable of facing whatever life throws at you. Know that you’ll always have a safe haven with those who love you.
Most importantly, I want you to recognize that you possess everything necessary to thrive in school, work, love, and all your future endeavors. You are destined to achieve great things.
As for my wish? I hope that every now and then, you’ll send me a “goodnight, Mom,” even if it follows a request for funds. It would be wonderful if you still let me peek in to ensure you’re safe (and yes, that Netflix is off). I cherish the bond we’ve built over these past 18 years, rooted in love, trust, and respect. I want you to share your life and new experiences with me, allowing me to witness your adventures from the sidelines. It’s been the greatest honor to raise you, and now, as you step out into the world, it’s beautiful to see you standing on your own.
Thank you for the past 18 years—they truly have been the best of my life, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.
