Advice I’m Taking as a Second-Time Mom

Becoming a mom for the first time often comes with an avalanche of advice. Everyone seems eager to share their insights on everything from sleep strategies to the best techniques for burping a baby. While some tips I received as a new mom didn’t quite resonate, a few have become my guiding principles that I’m now happily embracing as I navigate motherhood for the second time.

Get Your Sleep While You Can!

Initially, I dismissed the idea that you could “stockpile” sleep. I thought, “That’s ridiculous! You can’t save sleep for later.” Now, however, I get it. Most parents find themselves in a sleep-deprived fog for months, or even years. Those early days of sleepless nights can leave you wide awake at every little sound. I’ve learned to seize the moments when my toddler naps to catch up on rest. It’s a glorious feeling to recharge for those long nights ahead!

Hold Off on Buying Every Baby Gadget

With my first child, I went a bit overboard buying baby gear. Now I’ve learned to hold off until I genuinely need something. Sure, it’s less convenient, but it saves a ton of money on things that might just collect dust. Plus, running errands can be a nice break for me while my partner enjoys some quality time with both kids. If I need a moment to breathe as a nursing mom, it’s a win-win.

Cut Each Other Some Slack

The early months of parenthood can be a whirlwind of exhaustion, and it’s easy to snap at your partner. As a second-time mom, I’ve realized that both my partner, Jake, and I know we’re not going to be our best selves during this chaotic time. We’re learning to give each other grace and understanding, even when tempers flare at 3 a.m. after a challenging night. It’s a reminder that temporary frustrations don’t define our love or the strength of our relationship.

Summary

Navigating motherhood a second time around brings clarity to previously overwhelming advice. From the importance of sleep to the decision to minimize unnecessary purchases, I’m learning to embrace the journey. Cutting my partner some slack has also proven essential for maintaining harmony in our home.
