When my partner, Alex, and I exchanged our vows nearly 16 years ago, they felt meaningful, albeit a bit predictable. They certainly don’t encompass the reality of being confined at home for weeks on end during a crisis that feels surreal.
Crisis situations have a knack for revealing the true colors of those involved, and we are undeniably in a tumultuous time. Thankfully, this ordeal has showcased the incredible strength of my partner. It’s hard not to feel grateful for my life choices, as Alex has been my anchor.

Yet, amidst my turmoil, Alex has been my rock. He brings calm to my chaos, humor to my sorrow, and logic to my anxiety. His unwavering support is keeping our family afloat.
Don’t get me wrong—our marriage has faced its share of tests, and I believe every couple has experienced rough patches. However, right now, we are standing strong together. We’ve invested time in building coping strategies, and we’re pulling out every tool in our arsenal to navigate this storm.
There’s no way to sugarcoat the current situation. We are in the midst of a full-blown pandemic that has flipped our lives upside down. The “normal” we once knew has vanished. We’re now tasked with homeschooling our children while juggling jobs, often with little privacy and constant togetherness. Anxiety levels are soaring, and stress is at an all-time high.

We’re sheltering in place with our immediate family, cut off from the outside world, and I find solace in the fact that Alex is my partner in this journey.
We are living in circumstances we never anticipated—certainly not when we stood before each other, filled with hope and dreams. Who could have predicted “for worse” would mean rationing essential supplies, or that “for better” would involve streaming the latest Netflix sensations as a distraction from the chaos? The notion of “for poorer” has taken on an entirely new meaning in the face of economic downturns, and “in sickness” has transformed into a global health crisis.
Does anyone truly grasp the implications of their vows until they are faced with overwhelming challenges? Does anyone know how a relationship will hold up until they are navigating an uphill battle together? Perhaps some do, but for many, it’s a learning experience.
And so, we make our promises. If we’re fortunate and dedicated, we may uphold them, even when times are tough. These are undeniably confusing and challenging moments, but it’s essential to cherish the ones you’re weathering the storm with.
If we ever renew our vows, I’ll be sure to include “in good times and during a global pandemic” among our pledges.
