Why the Guy Who Trespassed on Disney World’s Abandoned Island is Surprisingly Relatable

In case you missed the news, a 42-year-old man from Alabama named Gary Thompson was recently arrested for trespassing on Disney World’s Discovery Island. And while the term might be overused, it’s hard not to see him as a bit of a hero.

While many of us are stuck at home, Gary decided to escape to an abandoned island within Disney World. Honestly, I didn’t even consider such a bold move. My partner and I had already invested a significant portion of our child’s college fund into a Disney vacation before the pandemic hit, and the thought of it being non-refundable has kept us on edge. Instead of stressing over our canceled plans, I wish I had the audacity to take matters into my own hands like Gary did.

Reports reveal that Gary had intended to camp on the island for about a week. For those who have looked into the expense of a week at Disney World, you know it’s nearly the price of a down payment on a home. Clearly, he found a budget-friendly way to experience the magic.

Now, I understand that his confusion about the exact day he ventured out might make him seem a bit eccentric. However, after weeks of isolation, I can relate to that. As I write this from the cramped space of my son’s closet — the only available room in our home — I’ve lost track of time and find myself grappling with the same sense of disorientation.

What Was Life Like for Gary on That Island?

He referred to it as a “tropical paradise,” according to the Orange County authorities. Discovery Island, which opened in 1974 as a zoo, housed over 130 species of animals before closing in 1999. In the years since, adventurous explorers have periodically made unauthorized visits to document the decaying structures. After watching some of their footage, I can confidently say it looks far more appealing than my current surroundings.

In a time when social distancing is paramount, why not seek solitude on an abandoned island? Gary truly went above and beyond. He not only evaded crowded spaces but also enjoyed seclusion in a unique location. I’m no health expert, but his chances of contracting COVID-19 there must have been minimal.

Of course, his trespassing didn’t go unnoticed. Disney’s security team deployed boats and helicopters to locate him, which feels like an overreaction. Gary reportedly missed their announcements while napping in one of the island’s structures. If I were in his shoes, I might have tuned out all the noise too.

Gary faced a misdemeanor charge for his actions and was banned from all Disney properties, although it’s unclear whether this ban is permanent or temporary. Considering his adventure, a misdemeanor seems like a small price to pay. If he can navigate a ban, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back at Disney, hands raised in excitement on the next ride.

Interestingly, Gary has a YouTube channel where he shares more about his Disney escapade. If you’re interested in further details, check it out.

While I typically steer clear of political discussions, the idea of “Disney World Island Man 2020” has a certain appeal, doesn’t it? This kind of unconventional thinking might just be what we need more of in these times.

In summary, while Gary Thompson’s trespass may have been illegal, it speaks to a desire for adventure and a break from the mundane, relatable to many of us feeling confined during these unusual times.
