Moose has been a full-time therapy dog since 2014, providing comfort and support to students over the past six years. Originally trained at Guiding Eyes for the Blind in New York, he was adopted by Dr. Emily Johnson, a licensed counselor and the coordinator of the university’s Animal-Assisted Therapy program. In 2019, Moose was named the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association’s animal hero for his efforts, during which he has participated in more than 7,500 counseling sessions and engaged in numerous outreach activities.
Dr. Johnson emphasized the importance of therapy dogs like Moose, stating that they play a vital role in creating a safe and comforting environment during counseling sessions. “Dogs offer a sense of security,” she explained, noting that for many individuals, pets can provide a more trusting presence than other people.
Despite recently being diagnosed with prostate cancer, Moose has shown resilience and has successfully returned to his duties alongside fellow therapy dogs. “He’s undergoing treatment but is thriving and back at work,” Dr. Johnson remarked.
Moose’s journey began at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, but due to a medical issue, he was unable to qualify as a guide dog. Instead, he was adopted by Dr. Johnson and soon became an invaluable member of the counseling team. “He’s earned his diploma, but let’s not forget he’s still a dog,” Dr. Johnson quipped. “Though I bet he could make a great veterinarian!”
Outside of his therapeutic role, Moose enjoys swimming, playing tug-of-war, and spending quality time with his furry friends. He truly embodies the spirit of a “very good boy.”
