Why I Will Always Take My Daughters on Dog Walks in My ‘Nice’ Neighborhood

Every day, I take my dog, Max, for walks around my neighborhood, usually accompanied by one or both of my daughters. While this may seem like a simple family routine, I must confess that I feel an overwhelming sense of fear when considering walking alone. In fact, during the four years I have lived in my home, I have never ventured out without my girls and my furry companion by my side.

Some may perceive this as an exaggeration or a misguided attempt to highlight racial issues, but this is my lived experience. When I stroll down the street holding my daughter’s hand, with Max trotting beside us, I’m just a devoted dad and pet owner momentarily escaping the challenges of remote learning. However, without my daughters, I become a source of suspicion to some individuals in my community. They see me not as a father but as a tall black man in a mask, wandering where I seem unwelcome, despite my intentions being entirely innocent.

This reality is both exhausting and disheartening. I cannot walk freely without the looming fear of being misjudged or targeted.

To those who might find this perspective shocking, I must remind you that we live in a society where many refuse to acknowledge the existence of racism or the concept of White Privilege, dismissing it as a political correctness ploy. Recent cases involving individuals like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor have highlighted these issues, yet there are still those who remain oblivious to the truth.

Here are some important points to consider:

  1. Recognizing White Privilege does not mean one’s life is devoid of challenges; it simply indicates that race is not an added burden. For example, if you’ve never worried about the police being called on you for simply birdwatching, you are experiencing a privilege that many people of color, myself included, do not share.
  2. The phrase “All Lives Matter” in response to “Black Lives Matter” is tone-deaf. Until Black lives are treated with the same value as others, we cannot claim that all lives truly matter.
  3. Racism exists and is not confined to extreme political groups. It can manifest in various forms, as evidenced by recent incidents in seemingly progressive areas.
  4. The concept of reverse racism is a misnomer; it does not exist.
  5. White allies play a crucial role in combating racism. If you’ve made it this far, I hope you will choose to be one of those allies. Your voice is essential for people of color during these times.
  6. If you choose to remain silent on these issues, I struggle to understand your motivations. If the injustices occurring today don’t compel you to act, what will? It’s worth reflecting on the nature of our friendship if you’re unwilling to stand against actions that could jeopardize my safety.

For now, I will continue to walk through my community, hand in hand with my eight-year-old daughter, hoping her presence will shield me from potential harm. It may seem strange, but such is the world we inhabit today.
