5 Ways Technology Is Transforming Childhood

Sometimes I find myself pondering how different my childhood might have been if computers hadn’t been those magical yet bulky contraptions used only by the most tech-savvy kids, or if cell phones hadn’t resembled bricks. I observe my child and his deep attachment to his smartphone, tablet, gaming console, and laptop. The constant ping of messages and the enthusiastic “No way!” or “Awesome!” erupting from his gaming sessions make me chuckle and cringe in equal measure.

While I often reflect on how my own childhood would have been impacted by today’s technology, I also consider what our children might be missing out on. Sure, there are the common arguments about them losing touch with nature, failing to form genuine connections, and not spending enough time outdoors. But what about the subtler differences? Today’s children, tweens, and teens are missing out on:

  1. Creative Note Folding: Remember those elaborate origami-like folds you used to make for notes passed to your best friend during class? I still cherish a collection of those from middle school. Texting may be quick and easy, but it lacks the charm of those carefully folded pieces of paper.
  2. Using Wite-Out: It may sound trivial, but the first time I used Wite-Out on a paper was a significant moment for me. It represented a rite of passage into adulthood. The simple act of hitting backspace just doesn’t carry the same weight.
  3. True Independence: In my day, when my mom dropped me off at the mall or the movies, there was an unspoken trust that I would stay there. She would wait for my call from a payphone (ask your kid what that is; you’ll get a confused look!). Nowadays, I find myself constantly checking in on my son via text, and I could easily track him using GPS technology.
  4. Not Knowing Everything: When kids ask questions about the world, the common response is, “Just Google it.” The luxury of exploring knowledge through traditional means, like encyclopedias or trips to the library, has been lost. Everything is simply a search away on their smartphones.
  5. Privacy with Photos: Remember waiting days to see photos from family outings? If you wanted to hide embarrassing pictures, you just tucked the album away. Today, social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram make it impossible to keep those moments under wraps.

Despite these changes, kids today are incredibly fortunate. They have immediate access to a wealth of information, can keep in touch with friends no matter the distance, and can even create and produce their own movies with ease. Yet, there’s something nostalgic about the anticipation of waiting to rent a favorite film on VHS—things have certainly changed.
