Are you in need of a delightful escape from the challenges of 2020? Look no further than “Bridgerton,” the latest creation from the talented Shonda Rhimes now streaming on Netflix. If you haven’t watched the trailer yet, today is the day to immerse yourself in the stunning cast, extravagant costumes, and the enchanting voice of Julie Andrews, who narrates the gossip-filled world of Regency-era England.
Based on the beloved historical romance series by Julia Quinn, “Bridgerton” kicks off with the first book, The Duke and I. Set between 1813 and 1827, this captivating series spans eight novels, chronicling the adventures of the close-knit Bridgerton family as they navigate the highs and lows of Regency social events, family antics, and the scandalous escapades of high society in London. Each of the eight Bridgerton siblings, charmingly named in alphabetical order, has their own unique story to tell.
In this Shondaland adaptation, we follow Daphne Bridgerton (played by the talented Phoebe Dynevor) as she enters London’s cutthroat marriage market. Beautiful and spirited, Daphne aspires to marry for love, just like her parents, despite the societal pressures of her time. However, her older brothers—Anthony, Benedict, and Colin—are determined to vet her suitors, while the enigmatic Lady Whistledown (voiced by the one and only Julie Andrews) stirs up drama with her scandalous writings.
Lady Whistledown is privy to all the secrets of the elite, and when the brooding Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset (played by the captivating Regé-Jean Page), enters Daphne’s life, sparks begin to fly. Yet, their journey is fraught with obstacles and unexpected turns.
“Bridgerton” also stands out for its diverse casting, featuring Black and brown actors in roles of nobility alongside their white counterparts, breaking the mold of traditional period dramas. Casting director Kelly Valentine Hendry noted that the industry has only recently begun to embrace inclusivity, allowing for a richer storytelling experience.
As a devoted fan of Quinn’s novels, I was overjoyed to see them brought to life in this sumptuous Netflix series, helmed by Shonda Rhimes. Romance novels often get overlooked, despite their strong female protagonists, heartfelt stories, and the joy they bring readers. Unlike tragic tales that dominate mainstream narratives, these stories celebrate love, laughter, and life’s ups and downs.
With Bridgerton arriving on Netflix on December 25, it promises to be a much-needed source of joy in a challenging year.
