In a recent virtual chat on The Late Show, actor Hugh Grant opened up about his unusual experience with COVID-19 earlier this year, sharing some of the more embarrassing symptoms he faced. As the pandemic has progressed, various celebrities have shared their stories, including Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Khloe Kardashian, shedding light on the signs to watch out for with the virus.

Grant recounted to host Stephen Colbert that his initial symptom was an overwhelming amount of sweat. “It began as a very odd condition where I was constantly breaking out in a terrible sweat—it felt like I was wearing a poncho made of sweat, which was quite embarrassing,” he said. He also described a sensation where it felt like an enormous weight was pressing down on his chest, humorously likening it to being sat on by someone like Harvey Weinstein.

When Colbert asked if he had tested positive, Grant revealed he and his wife, Anna Eberstein, both fell ill in February. He later tested positive for COVID antibodies about a month ago, leading him to believe that was when he contracted the virus. “At first, I thought, ‘What is going on?’ Then one day while walking, I realized, ‘I can’t smell anything,’ which made me panic,” he explained. Grant humorously recalled sniffing flowers and even garbage cans in desperation to check his sense of smell. “I even ended up spraying my wife’s Chanel No. 5 directly on my face, but still couldn’t smell a thing—though I did go blind!” he joked.

Other celebrities have also discussed their experiences with the virus. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared that he, his wife Lauren Hashian, and their two young daughters contracted COVID, although the kids managed to recover quickly. Johnson noted that he and Lauren faced a tougher battle. Alyssa Milano has also been vocal about her COVID journey, sharing on Instagram the significant hair loss she experienced as a result. “One brushing, this is my hair loss from COVID-19,” she said, showing a clump of hair. “Wear a damn mask.”

While Grant approached his ordeal with humor, it’s important to remember the seriousness of the virus as case numbers continue to rise. As winter approaches, it’s crucial to maintain hand hygiene, social distancing, and wearing masks.
