Many people hold a certain vision of what life is like with a Hollywood celebrity, but the reality can be quite different. I can attest to this, as I am married to one.
Before you pass judgment or roll your eyes, let me clarify that this isn’t a complaint. I fully understood the lifestyle I was stepping into when I married my husband, and I wouldn’t change a thing. My goal is to provide a clearer picture of what celebrity life is really like, and to highlight that celebrities are just regular people too.
While my husband may not be a top-tier celebrity, he has an impressive career and is recognized by many for his work. Surprisingly, we lead a rather ordinary life in the suburbs, much like many of you.
He is one of the most down-to-earth individuals I know. He prefers a home-cooked dinner over dining out, loves to relax in our own bed, and enjoys working out alone in the garage. He views himself simply as a guy with a job he loves, albeit one that puts him in the public eye.
However, this isn’t your standard 9-to-5 job with predictable hours or benefits. His career is a wild ride, full of unpredictability and rejection. It’s impossible to know when the next opportunity will arise, and sometimes he gets a call to fly out within a day. Other times, work can be scarce for months.
Due to the nature of his work, my husband is frequently away from home. Even when he’s working locally, his hours can stretch beyond 14 hours a day. He often doesn’t know his schedule until the day before, and there are no days off or sick leaves. We try to see each other as often as possible, aiming to not go more than a couple of weeks apart, but sometimes it’s just not feasible. We’ve experienced stretches of six weeks without seeing one another, as he could be filming in Canada one week and then off to North Carolina the next.
Occasionally, I get to accompany him on trips, which was enjoyable before we had kids. Our eldest has traveled extensively and has more flight miles than many adults, and our youngest already has his first passport stamp. However, with kids in school and various activities, coordinating family travel has become nearly impossible, and our family vacations often turn into last-minute weekend getaways.
As his wife, I have to be ready for anything, often planning as if he won’t be home for extended periods. This transition can be tough, especially when he goes from being present all the time to disappearing for weeks. His absence highlights how much I value his involvement as a husband and father when he is home.
With him traveling so frequently, I handle most of the day-to-day parenting, which can be overwhelming. This often means putting my career on hold. So when he’s away for long stretches, I remind myself that he struggles with it just as much as I do.
I manage our household without the help of maids or nannies. Yes, I cook and clean—our home is filled with the usual messes, unfolded laundry, and the sounds of kids arguing or crying. During the school year, I feel like a taxi driver, and the chaotic time between dinner and bedtime can be a whirlwind.
What bothers me most is when strangers judge me based on their assumptions. People often think they know my life and make snap judgments, but with a quick online search, I can find numerous trolls critiquing my marriage, parenting, and choices.
Are there perks? Absolutely! For one, my husband is fortunate to do what he loves while providing for our family. We enjoy a comfortable life, and our children are happy and well-adjusted. Although we tend to be homebodies, some Hollywood events can be enjoyable, giving me a chance to dress up and socialize with interesting people.
Mostly, we can live a normal life without interruptions. However, it’s not unusual for fans to recognize him and ask for photos or autographs. I often find it amusing how people will cautiously approach me to confirm his identity. Once they get to know us beyond the celebrity facade, they are often surprised to learn that we are just like any other family.
