If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming tale, look no further than the enchanting bond formed between a four-year-old girl and her enchanting friend—a real-life fairy—during the pandemic.
Photographer Mia Rivera from Los Angeles recently shared on Twitter her delightful friendship with a little girl named Lily, who used to live nearby. Their connection blossomed over a fairy garden, born from a shared need for joy amid isolation. “I think everyone could use a lighthearted story right now, so here it goes,” Rivera tweeted. “At the start of the pandemic, I was dealing with some personal challenges and often took long walks at night because I couldn’t sleep. One evening, I noticed some cute decorations in a tree planter. Upon closer look, I discovered it was a fairy garden, along with a note from Lily, expressing her loneliness during quarantine and her wish to spread some happiness.”
The following day, Rivera responded with a note as a fairy named Emerald, inviting Lily to complete a series of fun tasks to earn “magical fairy treasures.” The tasks included complimenting loved ones, helping someone in need, promising to be kind, and drawing her favorite animal. Rivera was unsure if Lily would reply, but to her surprise, the very next night, Lily wrote back, and their story quickly captured the hearts of many.
“I believe people resonated with our story because loneliness has been so prevalent this year. Everyone needs a reminder that a bit of magic is beneficial for all ages,” Rivera told Scary Mommy. “However, if you plan on creating something special for a child, always consult their parents first to ensure it’s okay.”
Rivera never anticipated the story would gain such widespread attention. “I went to bed with less than ten likes on my tweet, and when I woke up, it was chaos!” she said. “I’m thrilled that it has had such a positive impact and touched so many people. That makes the whirlwind worth it.”
Even after Lily moved away, the two maintained their enchanting long-distance friendship. “Writing to her every night gave me purpose during a very challenging time. I began looking forward to my days again, ordering art supplies and little gifts to send her,” Rivera shared. “I also communicated with her mom via text to ensure my presents were more personal.”
Rivera even dressed as a fairy for photos she sent to Lily, and they finally met in person after both tested negative for COVID-19. Lily was overjoyed to meet Emerald, and they spent an hour together, with Lily bombarding Rivera with questions about life as a fairy. “It was a magical experience and one of the most meaningful afternoons of my life,” Rivera wrote.
