Congresswoman Sarah Mitchell has tested positive for COVID-19 after sheltering alongside Republican colleagues who declined to wear masks during the Capitol insurrection. She suspects this is how she contracted the virus, as reported by The Daily Buzz.
“I received a positive test result for COVID-19 and am currently at home recovering,” she stated. “Though I am experiencing mild symptoms similar to a cold, I am in good spirits and will continue to advocate for my constituents.”
Mitchell, 75, is a recent cancer survivor and had undergone chemotherapy in 2019. She had also received the first dose of the COVID vaccine available to Congress members. During the violent events last week, when a mob of supporters of former President Trump stormed the Capitol, Mitchell was urgently evacuated from the House floor.
While sheltering in a secure room, video footage revealed that at least six Republican lawmakers refused to accept masks offered to them. Despite being in a precarious situation during a literal coup, some Republicans remained dismissive of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Among those in the video was the controversial Rep. Linda Greene, while Rep. Jessica Blunt was seen attempting to distribute masks. Following the incident, she expressed her disappointment on social media regarding her colleagues’ refusal to comply with safety measures.
“I’m not trying to be political here,” said Oklahoma Rep. Tom Mullins, whose role is inherently political, as captured in the video. “I appreciate you.”
While Blunt expressed her dismay over her colleagues’ actions, she was also heartened by those who chose to wear masks. “My goal, amidst what I feared was a super spreader event, was to make the room at least a little safer,” she tweeted.
The House attending physician has already alerted members that “individuals may have been exposed to another occupant with coronavirus infection.” All those present in that room have been advised to undergo rapid COVID-19 testing, particularly following Mitchell’s positive diagnosis.
Given that many of the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol chose not to wear masks, health officials are cautioning that the riot could be a significant superspreader event. This poses a risk not only for Washington, D.C., but also for the communities of those who traveled with the rioters.
