However, ordinary citizens are not beholden to political norms. There’s no mandate that we must engage fairly with those who oppose us. From the start, many Republicans—especially those loyal to the previous president—have shown that they prioritize their own interests above all. What makes us think they will suddenly choose to be fair? The likelihood is minimal. Their calls for “peace” are merely tactics to distract us from their true desire for power and dominance. Had the previous president remained in office, they wouldn’t be advocating for unity; they would still be promoting divisive policies.
Consider the events surrounding the Capitol insurrection. The rioters were not protesting economic inequality or racial injustice; they stormed the building at the behest of a president who refused to accept the election results. This mob, fueled by anger over a legitimate electoral loss, violently attacked law enforcement and endangered countless lives. They acted out of rage because many BIPOC citizens voted against them. If unity were truly their goal, they would have heeded the voices of the marginalized who sought to remove Trump from office.
How can we—Black individuals and other marginalized communities—find any common ground with those who think our quest for basic human rights is radical? They view our demands for a living wage, affordable healthcare, and equitable education as threats. It’s hard to fathom that people can consider advocating for equal treatment a radical viewpoint. If they so clearly reject our humanity, why should we feel compelled to engage amicably? There’s simply no foundation for unity when they don’t even recognize the existence of inequality.
As for equity, their intentions are transparent. While some may be swayed by their rhetoric, most see through the facade. It’s impossible to reason with those who have made their loyalties clear. When a marginalized individual receives even a sliver of opportunity, they react with outrage. The previous president spent his term inciting fear among his followers about immigrants, people of color, and marginalized communities. He pushed harmful policies like the Muslim ban and stripped away protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, all out of fear of equality.
In what world can we expect to find common ground with individuals who act solely in their self-interest, disregarding our humanity? Their actions reveal a consistent pattern of seeking power, and now they want to pretend that they genuinely desire collaboration. But their goal is not unity; they want to manipulate us into allowing them to regain control, only to abandon us again. This cycle is nothing new, and we cannot fall for it again.
Those on the right seeking unity are not sincere. They reacted with violence to their loss, and now they want us to overlook their actions over the past four years. They spout empty phrases like “kindness” and “agree to disagree,” as if we can simply erase their past behavior. Some may argue for forgiveness in the name of progress, but we cannot continue to sweep issues under the rug in the name of superficial unity. This mindset is counterproductive; it’s time to hold them accountable.
If they genuinely want unity, they must face the repercussions of their choices. Words alone will no longer suffice—concrete actions are necessary to demonstrate their commitment to change. They must actively work to create a more equitable system and remove those who do not share these values. Since it’s unlikely they will take these necessary steps, we should cut off the conversation here. Many of us from marginalized communities do not feel obligated to engage nicely with individuals who deny our rights. Why should we extend kindness to those who have labeled us as “libtards,” “snowflakes,” and worse? These are not genuinely kind people seeking harmony; they want to evade accountability for their past actions. We, especially those of us from marginalized backgrounds, owe them nothing.
