My Child Struggles with Anxiety – What I’ve Learned to Avoid

When my child was just four years old, their preschool teacher reached out with concerns. My child was frequently expressing discomfort about the classroom noise, more so than their peers. By second grade, they were constantly reporting minor misbehaviors of classmates, and goodbyes became a source of distress rather than a cheerful send-off. After delightful playdates, my child would retreat to their room at the thought of saying goodbye, refusing to greet our guests. Alongside this, there were ongoing stomach pains and habitual nail-biting.

It didn’t take long for me to connect the dots—I suspected my child had anxiety. After a psychological evaluation, my fears were validated: my child was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, just like I had struggled with for years without support.

Growing up, I often found myself in a state of worry, from fearing my father’s early morning commute to anticipating the worst in any situation. I constantly experienced digestive problems, felt overwhelmed by rules, and disliked disorder. It wasn’t until middle school that my parents sought medical help, but the doctor dismissed my symptoms as typical childhood anxieties, suggesting I simply needed an outlet for my nervous energy.

As I grew older, friends told me to “calm down” or “chill out,” which only added to my frustration. I was the one always reminding others of the rules, making me a less than exciting companion. Eventually, in my thirties, I was correctly diagnosed with anxiety after enduring sporadic panic attacks. Therapy and medication, combined with healthy lifestyle choices, have since enabled me to manage my condition.

Reflecting on my past, I realize how much I missed out on due to my anxiety. I was so preoccupied with controlling outcomes that I failed to appreciate the moment. I experienced physical tension constantly, and my mind was always racing with “what if” scenarios. Determined not to let my child endure the same struggles in silence, we acted promptly when we recognized their anxiety.

We found a therapist, encouraged physical activity and journaling, and even discussed the meaning of anxiety with our child. We believe that understanding the diagnosis is a crucial step toward healing, and we want our child to know it’s okay to seek help.

The isolation that comes with untreated anxiety can be debilitating. I often felt different and dismissed, leading to self-doubt and loneliness. I was determined to prevent my child from experiencing this isolation. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to challenge unhealthy coping mechanisms and toxic thoughts.

In a way, my anxiety has been a blessing in disguise. It enabled me to identify similar struggles in my child early on, allowing us to tackle their anxiety together. We communicate openly about our experiences, creating a bond that brings comfort. My child witnesses my own journey in managing anxiety, and I hope to set a positive example.

Despite the challenges, we also find joy in our shared experiences. We enjoy meditating together, practicing yoga, and brewing calming teas at night. Simple activities like these have strengthened our parent-child relationship.

Anxiety is formidable, but together we face it head-on, knowing we have each other’s support.
