From a Texan: We Are Far from Alright Because Our Governor is a Mess

Greetings from Texas — the home of BBQ, bluebonnets, and some questionable leadership. You might want to check in on us because things are definitely not alright, alright, alright.

Recently, Governor Greg Abbott announced an Executive Order that lifts the mask mandate in Texas and allows all businesses and facilities to operate at full capacity starting March 10th. Yes, you heard that right—everything is back open. No masks required anywhere! Abbott claims it’s up to individuals to decide whether to social distance or wear a mask, even as new variants are popping up all over the state. Perfect timing right before Spring Break, right? This sounds logical and not at all rash!

So, congratulations, Texas! You are now free to gather in large crowds, party hard, and spread a virus instead of dealing with the minor inconvenience of wearing a mask or caring for others. Because, hey, it’s all about your “freedumbs,” right?

Did I somehow miss the announcement that COVID is gone? Nope, because that definitely hasn’t happened. The virus is still a serious threat, with Texas reporting over 200 deaths daily and a staggering 2.6 million cases since the pandemic began. As of this week, less than 7% of Texans are fully vaccinated.

Marginalized communities, especially BIPOC individuals, have been hit the hardest by this crisis. But who cares, right? I need to hit up Dave and Buster’s!

Abbott seems to think Texans can handle this responsibly. Seriously? These are the same folks who say they refuse to live in fear while strapping on their sidearms just to grab groceries. Recently, someone accidentally shot themselves while shopping. I mean, come on!

Texas is also the state where the speed limit can hit 85 in certain areas — no exaggeration!

Just to add to the eccentricity, there’s a story about a woman who was banned from a Walmart for riding an electric cart while sipping wine from a Pringles can at 9 a.m. Okay, maybe she’s goals.

Could this announcement be a distraction from Abbott’s failures during the recent winter crisis that left millions in the dark and cold? His decision seems like an attempt to divert attention from his missteps, not to mention “Cancun Cruz” — Ted’s embarrassing getaway to Mexico while Texans were struggling. Some folks still lack basic necessities, but hey, at least you don’t have to wear a mask while you wait for food and water!

Abbott cites declining COVID numbers, but what he fails to mention is that those numbers have been hard to track lately due to the lack of power, water, or testing facilities. Not exactly the best conditions for accurate reporting!

Before this announcement, several local leaders, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, urged Abbott to maintain the mask mandate, citing real concerns about the dangers of lifting restrictions too soon. Their voices were ignored, of course.

Former Representative Beto O’Rourke, a potential challenger to Abbott in the upcoming election, even tweeted that this decision is essentially a death sentence for Texans. Wow, go off!

On a brighter note, many businesses in Texas are choosing to keep their safety protocols intact, and that’s reassuring. While I sympathize with businesses affected by these decisions, I know it’s not the time to relax restrictions or abandon masks altogether. The majority of sensible Texans are committed to following science rather than political agendas. They will continue to stick to CDC guidelines, including limiting capacity and providing hand sanitizing stations. By adhering to these safety measures and waiting until most Texans are vaccinated, we might, just might, be okay again.

Especially if we can vote in a new governor next time around!

In summary, the situation in Texas is far from ideal as the governor makes decisions that jeopardize public health. While some businesses are opting for safety, the overall trend is concerning. Texans must continue to advocate for responsible practices until we can truly say we’re alright again.
