I never gave my vulva much thought until I had a specific reason to, like when I was trying to conceive or suspected a yeast infection. Honestly, I don’t make it a habit to spend excessive time examining or even thinking about my vulva — at least not in natural light.
Too much info? As a lesbian, I’ve encountered many vulvas and can confidently say that no two are identical. I’ve come to appreciate the uniqueness of each one, including my own, in ways I never anticipated. We should all cherish our vulvas because we only have one, so why not value it?
Getting to this point of appreciation took time. I now understand my vulva much better than I did in my twenties, and my appreciation has deepened. It’s time to familiarize ourselves with our vulvas, show them some love, and be vigilant about any health concerns that may arise as we navigate life as proud vulva-owners.
Understanding the Terminology
First, let’s clarify some terminology. Many people mistakenly use the word “vagina” to describe their vulva, but that’s not accurate. As health writer Lisa Thompson explains, “A vulva refers to the visible external parts of the female anatomy, including the mons pubis, labia, clitoris, and more.”
Now, have you taken a good look at yours lately? No? You should. Here’s why: I recently experienced a vulvar cancer scare, something I didn’t even know existed. I won’t go into details, but it involved a vulva biopsy that was quite painful. At the time, I felt embarrassed to share my experience; I thought I was some oddity with a growth down there.
