In a recent conversation, we had the pleasure of speaking with Ava Thompson, an activist, author, and founder of FitMoms, about her journey through pregnancy and her commitment to advocating for maternal health, particularly in the Black community.

Ava, who is currently pregnant with her second child while raising her 2-year-old son, opened up about the challenges and joys of pregnancy. Reflecting on her first experience, she shared her struggles with anxiety, particularly in light of the troubling narratives surrounding Black maternal health. “During my first pregnancy, I felt overwhelmed with anxiety. With so many distressing stories in the media, it was hard not to feel like I might become just another statistic,” Ava explained. To combat these feelings, she emphasizes the importance of visualizing positive outcomes: “I often envision peaceful moments in the future, like sitting outside on a sunny day watching my kids play.”

This time around, Ava has also been experiencing some unusual cravings, a stark contrast to her previous pregnancy. “I didn’t have any cravings before, but now I can’t get enough canned fish. I joke that I might just become a sardine!” she laughed.

When it comes to planning for her upcoming birth, Ava is taking a more proactive approach compared to her first experience, where she went into labor without a set plan. “I think we often feel pressured to have hospital births, but I’m more aware now of the risks involved, especially for Black mothers,” she said. “While I’m not ready for a home birth, I’ve found a happy medium. I’ll be working with midwives at a modern maternity center that collaborates with hospital care. It’s important to me to have the best of both worlds.”
