In times of chaos, Netflix provides a reliable escape. The intriguing “Top 10 in the U.S.” alert catches my eye every time I log in, and I recently found myself watching the trailer for “Cocomelon” until my son reminded me, “You know that’s for kids, right?” Yes, I knew, but those tunes were too catchy to resist!
Nonetheless, my go-to section on Netflix is always the documentaries. I enjoy shows that challenge my thinking about social justice or provide insights that influence my daily life. Here are my eight must-watch documentaries currently streaming on Netflix.
Seaspiracy
Currently ranking #6 on Netflix, this riveting documentary dives deep into the state of marine life worldwide, backed by an intense musical score. It kicks off with a gripping scene reminiscent of crime dramas, drawing you into the ocean’s depths. It argues that humanity bears a duty to protect oceanic ecosystems and their inhabitants. The film offers a profound look into the pollution and financial motives that shape the fishing industry. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it—prepare to see the ocean, marine creatures, and humanity in a whole new light.
Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admission Scandal
This documentary gives a detailed reenactment of the infamous scandal involving celebrities like Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman. It combines what we thought we knew with shocking revelations. Through firsthand accounts, we see how some parents will go to extreme lengths—driven by privilege—to secure college spots for their unqualified children. It left me pondering Maya Angelou’s words: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” These parents, however, opted for a different path, funneling money to scam artist Rick Singer. This documentary will have you shaking your head in disbelief until the very end.
Murder Among The Mormons
Set in Utah, the heart of Mormonism, this captivating docu-series is impossible to pause once you start. It resembles a twisted religious soap opera, with interviews that create a chilling atmosphere. The exploration of cover-ups and deceit within the church unveils the bizarre story of Mark Hoffmann, a convicted killer and notorious forger. You’ll find yourself asking, “Wait… What? Why? How?” as the plot unfolds.
Athlete A
This documentary exposes the dark side of gymnastics. It features harrowing narratives from gymnasts, their families, and journalists, revealing how the voices of female athletes were silenced for far too long. Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics team doctor, violated the trust placed in him for over two decades, abusing more than 265 young women and girls. As you watch, you’ll realize that Nassar is not the sole villain; a systemic failure allowed his actions to go unchecked. While it’s a sobering watch, it also highlights the courage of survivors who are now striving for change in gymnastics.
Betty White: First Lady of Television
Who doesn’t need a good laugh? This documentary is a charming tribute to Betty White, a trailblazer in comedy who often challenged the industry’s norms. It showcases her support for Black comedians long before it became commonplace, illustrating her commitment to talent over race. With Betty White nearing her 100th birthday next year, this film celebrates her influence and the values she embodies, reminding us that her legacy extends beyond her craft.
Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath
From the very first episode, you’ll be hooked. The opening statement reveals, “In November 2016, Valerie Haney left the International Headquarters of Scientology in the trunk of a car”—instantly captivating! Hosted by Leah Remini, this docu-series takes viewers through the tumultuous experience of being part of a church that has garnered notorious public attention. With each episode, the narrative grows darker and more compelling.
Elizabeth and Margaret: Love & Loyalty
Following the Meghan and Harry interview, my curiosity about the monarchy surged. This documentary highlights the complicated bond between Queen Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, starting with a poignant moment at Margaret’s funeral. The visual storytelling delves into their relationship within an overwhelming system. It’s a touching reminder of the human side of royalty, encouraging you to reflect on your own familial connections.
Night Stalker: The Hunt For a Serial Killer
For true crime enthusiasts, this documentary is essential viewing. Although it takes a moment to gain momentum, the narration sets the stage for the terror inflicted by serial killer Richard Ramirez in Los Angeles. As the series unfolds, it examines the horrific crimes he committed while also providing insight into his troubled upbringing. This well-rounded portrayal will leave you feeling uneasy but also informed.
So, what are you waiting for? Turn on your TV and start with one of these documentaries. You’ll gain valuable insights into human behavior and the lengths individuals will go to achieve their desires. That’s the beauty of documentaries—they help us understand the diverse experiences of others.
