Preschool teachers are truly remarkable individuals, embodying what it means to nurture and educate the youngest members of our society. If the pandemic proved anything, it’s that dedicated teachers are heroes in their own right. Their ability to adapt, innovate, and guide our children through learning challenges has been nothing short of extraordinary. They deserve our utmost respect and a substantial pay increase.

My two children developed a profound admiration for their teachers from their early days in Pre-K, thanks to the exceptional educators who guided them. These preschool teachers have played a pivotal role in igniting their passion for learning.

The Role of Preschool Teachers

Preschool teachers provide much more than mere childcare. While caregivers in daycare centers offer essential love and support, the role of a preschool teacher is distinct and critical. At my son’s public preschool, his teacher is responsible for creating lesson plans, monitoring educational progress, and ensuring that each child thrives. Many preschool educators hold at least a bachelor’s degree in education or child development, equipping them to handle the diverse needs of their classrooms.

Children arrive at preschool with varying levels of knowledge; some can read, while others may not yet recognize letters. Preschool teachers must accommodate this range of abilities while addressing the emotional needs of young children who are still transitioning from infancy to school-age. Their mission to prepare students for kindergarten is challenging, yet they rise to it with dedication, resulting in many children achieving this important milestone.

Emotional Support and Development

The role of a preschool teacher extends far beyond basic academics. Four- and five-year-olds are navigating a complex emotional landscape, often experiencing separation anxiety for the first time. Every morning, some children may cry as their parents leave, yet by the end of the day, those same children emerge smiling, eager to share what they’ve learned.

For my son, who has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), preschool has been transformative. Although he already had a keen interest in letters and numbers and had taught himself to read before starting, his team recognized the importance of social interaction. His teacher, Mrs. Green, has been a phenomenal guide, focusing on his social development. I receive regular updates on his progress, ensuring I’m always informed about his challenges and achievements.

His classroom aide has also been a tremendous support, fostering a positive environment for him. Just recently, his teacher sent me a picture of him engaging with a classmate on the swings, showcasing his growing social skills. He’s learned to navigate the lunch line, ask peers to play, and cooperate during group activities—skills that will serve him well in kindergarten.

My older son, who is neurotypical, also had a transformative preschool experience. Initially anxious about being away from me, he thrived in a private program that matched him with peers who complemented his strengths and weaknesses. His teacher remains a cherished friend to this day, exemplifying how impactful a great preschool teacher can be.

The Lasting Impact of Preschool Educators

Regardless of whether a child is neurodivergent or neurotypical, the influence of an exceptional preschool teacher is invaluable. I eagerly await the day when my youngest can experience the joy of preschool as well.

Preschool educators may not always receive the recognition they deserve, but I want to take a moment to celebrate them. You are the architects of our children’s educational foundations. Your teaching lays the groundwork for a lifetime of learning. If no one has expressed gratitude to you today, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation on behalf of all the parents whose children have thrived because of your dedication. Thank you for your incredible work.
