TikTok, the popular short-video platform that became a virtual hub during quarantine, is taking a significant step toward inclusivity with its new auto caption feature. This addition aims to make content more accessible for users, particularly those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
“Inclusivity is vital because it fosters comfort and encourages self-expression within our community,” said Alex Bennett, TikTok’s Community Engagement Manager, in a recent press release. “We are dedicated to creating an inclusive environment and developing tools that cater to our diverse user base.”
With auto captions, TikTok will automatically generate text for videos that contain audio, allowing users to choose whether to read or listen to the content. Creators can easily select the auto caption option during the editing process, resulting in real-time transcription and on-screen text. If the automatic captions aren’t perfect, creators have the ability to edit them for accuracy.
Viewers will notice a new caption button on their TikTok interface, enabling them to turn captions on or off as desired. Currently, the auto caption feature is available in English and Japanese, with plans to expand support for additional languages in the near future. TikTok is actively promoting this feature among its top creators to further enhance accessibility for all users.
As the demand for inclusivity grows, auto captions are becoming a standard feature across various platforms, from YouTube to Instagram. This update is part of TikTok’s broader efforts to create a welcoming environment, which also includes features designed for users with epilepsy, a text-to-speech tool, and improved visual elements.
“Our mission at TikTok is to ensure accessibility for everyone, and we are committed to this goal in the long run,” Bennett stated. “As we progress, we will continue to share updates with our community to maintain transparency and showcase our efforts. TikTok is a platform for all, and we are dedicated to serving every member of our community.”
