Ah, the delightful silence that follows the chaotic summer days filled with endless chatter about dinosaurs or outer space. The much-anticipated back-to-school season is finally here. Strangely enough, despite my earlier grievances about being cooped up with my children for weeks, I found the end-of-summer countdown surprisingly pleasant.
Believe me, I’m just as shocked as anyone. Who would’ve thought I’d actually enjoy spending time with my kids? They’ve transformed into quite the amusing individuals, and, remarkably, they didn’t irritate me too much. On the first day of school, I felt an unusual sense of calm and confidence.
After successfully gathering the countless school supplies, engaging in back-to-school shopping for trendy outfits, purchasing new backpacks and lunch boxes, securing the right gym clothes, and even finding combination locks for their lockers, I was ready. I was proud and felt like I had it all together, perhaps for the first time in my life. I was practically a superhero. Until… I stepped outside and saw the scene unfolding before me.
The neighborhood was buzzing with excitement, and my neighbor across the street was orchestrating an elaborate photo shoot on her front lawn. I froze on my porch, realizing my oversight. I was supposed to capture these moments!
In truth, I had completely forgotten to take photos of my children on their first day of school. They’ve been attending school for about five years now, so I thought, how many first-day pictures does one really need? But then a nagging thought surfaced: good parents always seem to have it all figured out, and I couldn’t let that year slip away.
Unfortunately, I had already locked the front door with my phone inside, and I couldn’t risk ruining my perfect morning schedule. As I scrambled for a solution, an idea struck me. My daughter was never without her phone.
I turned to her and said, “Hand over your phone. I need to snap a picture of you and your brother on the first day.” She quickly handed over her device, and the two of them positioned themselves in front of the steps.
“Smile,” I instructed. But my son decided to make a series of unhappy faces, refusing to cooperate, so I wasn’t able to capture a nice photo to commemorate the occasion. The key takeaway, however, is that I did manage to get a picture.
