Today, the Biden family is grieving the loss of their cherished 13-year-old German Shepherd, Champ. The White House confirmed that Champ “passed away peacefully at home.”

“Our family has lost our dear friend Champ today,” said Joe Biden. “I will truly miss him.” In a heartfelt statement from both Joe and Jill Biden, they reflected on Champ being their “constant and beloved companion for the past 13 years,” noting that he was “deeply loved by the entire Biden family.”

“Even in his later days, when his energy faded, he would still rise to greet us whenever we entered a room, tail wagging and eager for an ear scratch or a belly rub,” the statement shared.

Champ enjoyed nothing more than snuggling at their feet in front of a fire, being a calming presence during meetings, or basking in the sun in the White House garden. Adopted by the Bidens in 2008, Champ was one of two German Shepherds at the White House, with Major joining the family in 2018 as the first rescue dog to live there. When Joe Biden became President, Champ and Major returned as the first pets in the White House after a four-year absence.

According to reports, the President named Champ after a phrase from his father, who used to say, “Any time you get knocked down, champ — get up!” Champ shared many years with the Bidens during Joe’s vice presidency and was known for his playful spirit, often chasing golf balls on the front lawn of the Naval Observatory.

“In his younger days, he was most joyful chasing golf balls or running after our grandchildren in our backyard in Delaware,” the statement continued. “Through our happiest moments and our saddest, he was there, attuned to our every feeling. We love our sweet, good boy and will miss him forever.”

Rest in peace, Champ. You will be missed by many.
