In a heartfelt interview, James Michael Turner, best recognized for his role as Gunther on ‘Friends,’ has revealed that he is battling advanced prostate cancer. The diagnosis, which occurred nearly three years ago, has progressed to Stage 4 and has left him unable to walk.
During a conversation with Today on June 21, 2021, Turner recounted how he received the diagnosis following a routine check-up in September 2018. “I was 56 years old at the time, and they screen for PSA, which is a prostate-specific antigen,” he explained. “The results showed an extraordinarily high number, and I knew something was wrong. Shortly after, my doctor called me to discuss the possibility of a serious prostate issue.”
Turner admitted missing an earlier test, which contributed to the cancer’s mutation during the pandemic. He initially underwent hormone therapy, which he described as effective for about a year, allowing him to maintain a semblance of normalcy in his life. “It was just a pill in the morning and night, and life was pretty much normal,” he said. “I felt fine, honestly, with no symptoms, and it was easy to manage.”
However, the cancer eventually metastasized to his bones and spine, leading to paralysis in his lower body. “My prognosis is Stage 4, late-stage cancer. Eventually, it’s going to get me,” he candidly shared.
Turner urges men to discuss PSA tests with their healthcare providers, hoping to save lives through early detection. “There are options available if caught early,” he stressed. “Next time you see your doctor, please ask for a PSA test; it’s easily detectable.”
In a recent virtual appearance during the ‘Friends’ reunion, Turner reflected on his time on the show. “It was the most memorable 10 years of my life,” he remarked. “Working with everyone was a joy, and it felt very special.”
Facing his illness, Turner has gained a new perspective, stating, “It’s made me realize the importance of every moment. Keep fighting and don’t give up.”
For men at average risk, it’s recommended to start discussions about PSA testing around age 50, while those at higher risk, such as Black men or those with a family history of cancer, should consider screening starting at age 40.
